Accessible software for composing music (self.Blind)
submitted by sdeboreddit
I have a blind friend who wishes to continue learning music and writing music compositions. I was told that Sibelius is accessible. Is this correct? Are there better alternatives? Thank you

Cakewalk Sonar used to be very accessible, but the version of the program that was accessible is very old and almost impossible to find these days, and modern versions don't work at all.

Reaper, QWS and actually Sonar as well are digital audio workstations first, tools for scoring second, which I think is what the OP is looking for.

The Dancing Dots idea is a good one, it would also require JAWS which is pretty pricy though.

Sibelius seems like a good, not to mention affordable choice, as they have a knowledge base article on using the program with a free screen reader called NVDA. Would that work?

$1

She is actively using NVDA. I will point her to Sibelius too. I had tried it in the past but never realised it was accessible to screenreader users. Thank you (all) for the great feedback

Quick Windows Sequencer can work, depending what one wants to do. It's free.

She is mainly after writing and reading music sheets. Her interests are mainly classical and pop music

Some good replies so far what about cakewalk?

Cakewalk on windows? How accessible is it? Does it do sheet music too?

I believe it is. I know a friend who’s used it successfully and have produced music. Not sure if the album he just put out last year uses it though.

Dancing dots with good feel and lime is completely screen reader accessible and can turn music into Braille to be embossed or print for sighted players. Has fantastic software and support. Would cost abot $1500

Reaper maybe?

I think that is a sequencer? She wishes to write music sheets. Heared about it before and will look it up though. Thanks

Oh yes. I kind of figured you meant a DAW, Digital Audio Workstation.
