Transportation in Texas (self.Blind)
submitted by Mesh1202
As a legally blind 17 year old, is there anything I could drive/use to get around that doesn't require a license? With my sight, I'll never be able to drive a car---but using the bus seems kind of risky in terms of probably missing where I want to go, and using Uber or Lyft anytime I want to leave home seems like it'd be expensive in the long run. Am I allowed to use a scooter? Or is there anything else?

Depending on where you live in Texas transit is gonna suck. Austin is decent. Houston is terrifying. And Dallas is almost perfect. And where I am now there is zero transit at all.

My advice is to get out of Texas if you can.

Edit: technically I believe tractors and golf carts are allowed without a license but banned on highways and major roads. Best of luck to you.

I had the opposite experience regarding Houston and Austin. I didn’t care for either of them but I slightly preferred Houston I think. I moved out of Houston in 06 though, so take it for what it’s worth.

You can look into if your state has any programs to make Uber/Lyft cheaper, where I live does.

And I don't know about Texas law but I have a legally blind buddy in Flordia and they are indeed allowed to use a scooter.

Most road worthy scooters and such require a driver’s license here. Buses, combined with walking and Uber:Lyft are the go-to I’ve always used (I’m from Austin, so crappy bus system). It’s a matter of learning to be produce with public transport.

Where in TX are you? I have lived in enough of this state at one time or another that I might be able to help.

I have some stories from my time spent down there. Anyway, some counties outside of the big urban areas in TX, and even some rural counties, have transportation options that people don’t realize is there. It doesn’t appear that Webb county does, and that doesn’t surprise me.

So my question for you is now this. You said you’re 17, correct? What are your plans? Are you staying there, going to college, where do you go from here? Your transportation situation will depend a lot on where you end up.

Also, ride sharing isn’t cheep, but once it became popular I never waited for another taxi.

If you’re in/around the Dallas area, look up DART Paratransit (curb to curb drop off)

Learn the buses or paratransit but buses is often cheaper an still helpful. I rely on those and trains.
