How do I get started in a career in digital accessibility? (self.Blind)
submitted by questions4theblind
I am well versed in technology particularly with screen reader software from different platforms but are there any certifications that I need if I wanted a career in accessibility?

I know nothing about this topic but am interested

Consider taking Deque’s CPACC prep course and take the exam.

Lots of companies are looking to hire accessibility specialists! Good luck!!

An entry level accessibility job would be working as a tester. Check out places like WebAIM, Level Access, or other companies that test and remediate web pages.

There is a certification for accessibility testing available through the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Accessible Systems and Technology called Trusted Tester.

Perhaps an odd question but looking at your reddit handle I do have to ask. Are you blind/visually impaired yourself? If not, why the familiarity with screenreaders? I'm genuinely just curious :)

As for certifications ...not ...really. There is a couple, but they are generally not highly sought after. I have been an accessibility know-it-all for several years now and never even heard the topic come up.

Having said that though, if you CAN offer some kind of proof of your skills that is always a plus. To learn, and also to gain this proof, I can't recommend the Deque University Curriculum any higher.

There's a scholarship available for people with a disability, and if you work through the entire program you can get a certification of completion. It's not a certificate governed by any certification authority of any kind, but I've found that in this field it's really good enough.

Take the courses over at $1 and study for the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) CPACC exam. I'm going to look into finally taking that soon.
