Hiring Stick from Netflix's Daredevil (self.Blind)
submitted by AwfullyColdWater
Hello All,

First time poster here. I am here on behalf of a close friend named El with RP and cataracts seeking advice/leads for an unconventional approach to living better while blind.

As many in this community can relate to, El developed a single-mindedness in developing unconventional methods and a general “fuck this, there has to be a way” approach to living his life. As a result, he’s done extremely well in the field of compsci and is now focused on addressing the biggest obstacle of his life — navigating his surroundings on his own terms.

It’s this mentality that inspired me to reach out to this community. I was hoping to learn more about the following:

Teachers/instructors:

My friend has completed about 10 hours of basic cane work and is still developing this skill. Meanwhile, he’s looking for someone who can teach him the skills that solves this problem: how do I got to the beach, a new restaurant, or visit a friend by myself given my condition? Think Stick from Netflix’s Daredevil.

The instructor should be able to provide explicit examples of what techniques they’ve done. A response of “it can’t be done” is unacceptable. Lastly, they must allow him to fail especially in public while providing feedback on how to correct for mistakes such as “You hit the curb because you didn’t extend your cane far enough”. It’s a matter of pride for El. No mollycoddling allowed. If the instructor privately practices, that’s ok, but my friend prefers someone under the insurance network. Do you know someone who fits these criteria?

And that’s pretty much it. We’re looking for a guy who developed an unconventional way to live life freely as someone blind on their own terms - a Stick to a future Matt Murdock. If there’s any additional information or clarification I may provide, please leave a comment or DM me. Thank you for reading to the end of this. I appreciate you.

How is what you're asking any different from orientation and mobility training, which is quite standard for anyone blind? Basic independence skills aren't unconventional.

There are two schools of thought for O&M in the U.S. Instructors with a COMS certification teach route-based travel—by learning specific routes, people can learn future routes with less direct training. This is the typical approach to O&M. But instructors with an NOMC certification teach general principles that can be applied to any route. This approach to O&M is called Structured Discovery Cane Travel. If your friend wants to learn it, probably the best places are the NFB training centers in Louisiana, Colorado and Minnesota, but there are also agencies teaching it in Nebraska, Hawaii and potentially other states, but it's not as widespread as the conventional approach to O&M.

Look up Daniel Kish, maybe he or someone from his org will work with you. The ra-ra rhetoric will probably turn some people off in here, and you have to wonder why your friend isn't posting this himself?

Sounds pretty normal doesn’t sound like a very unusual guy at all or mind set. There’s definitely more creative, or bold things.
