Stove for Visually Impaired (self.Blind)
submitted by ph03n1x333
Hello, I’m trying to find a new stove for my mom who has been totally blind since she was young. Needless to say it has been somewhat challenging finding what she needs in retail stores. Could someone help point me in the right direction?

Her requirements are below ranked from most important to least:

1. Electric 30” coil burner stove, with oven
4. Self cleaning or steam clean
3. Non-digital dials
5. Controls on back plate
6. Stainless steel
7. Price

Huge thank you in advance for any feedback!

Thanks for the replies so far! We would like to hit as many of these requirements as possible. This one is close, but I’m trying to do better for her: https://www.google.com/shopping/product/14611182009413459900?q=best+electric+stove+for+visually+impaired&safe=off&client=safari&hl=en-us&biw=375&bih=635&output=search&prmd=sinv&prds=epd:17608709421941070172,num:3,prmr:1,cs:1&tbs=vw:l,ss:44

Your link is coming up blank for me (maybe because I'm in the UK.)

I'm not sure about stove but when I use to teach blind people we had like these bump sticker where they would be able to tell witch one is to set it high or low. Along with if it further to the left it does this or if it further to the right it does that. It also work on the
knob, so if the bump is on the right side of the knobs it set to high and if it on the left it low.
We also used these on microwaves.

Not sure if this help or maybe gives you an idea. I believe there is some smart stove but those I'm sure will be super pricy

Sorry if my reply is off topic but my thoughts are that if she is not specifically after oven roasting, an instant pot (some have bluetooth apps) can saute and cook most foods with relative safety. Plus if you do not let food stick and burn in the pot, it is very easy to clean. There are also plenty of instant pot cooking ebooks to boot. Hope this helps.

Why doesn't your Mom want an induction hob? I know they can be next to impossible to find with knobs and not a touch panel, but they are cheaper to run and heat the pans very quickly (as long as the pans have the right kind of base)

The biggest problem with induction are the flat cooktops. Locating the burner reliably and centering the pot or pan atop the burner is difficult when the entire stovetop is a single smooth sheet of borrosilicate glass. I did see one demo that provided audio feedback as you moved the pan to center it. You pressed a button which started a tone, moved the pan around to maximize the tone and then released the button when you were statisfied with the pan placement. At this point it is not a standard feature though and I am not sure it ever will be.

Gorenje (a Slovenian business) did a project where they used silicone heat resistant covering for the stove top with cutouts where the pans go. The model of stove they used also had physical knobs to control the heating circuits. I don't think Gorenje make a hob with knobs at this time.

I really like the idea of a silicone template cover for the hob and if the time comes that it is needed I will have to try and find the materials to make one.

We have an induction hob made Smeg (an Italian business) that has knobs with very good tactile feedback. The have a distinct direction to their shape, the off position has a notch feel to it and the features (extra high power and accelerated heat up) are accessible by turning the knob until it hits a sprung resistance point, either clockwise or anti-clockwise respectively, and then an audible ping once the feature is selected. The edge of the hob is framed in stainless steel that contrasts well with the black of the main surface. This unit is still available in the UK and it works well for a cook with a severe visual impairment. Sad to say there doesn't seem to be an alternative so if Smeg stop making this design and we need a replacement we will have a problem.

I really like how easy induction hobs are to keep clean because they are flat. The surface never needs to get hotter than the pans do and these heat doesn't extend much beyond the underside of the pan. Spills usually don't burn into stubborn crusts They also provide a nice flat surface for putting things down on. We did have to replace most of our pans when we got the hob because of the way the hob works.
