Is this offensive? (self.Blind)
submitted by p0rp1q1
Is it offensive that I'm ok with going blind?

I have amblyopia, or a lazy eye, in my left eye, and its a condition that can make me go blind

But here's the thing, I hate the feeling of wearing glasses (I've always thought i had Aspergers) and my doctor said no to contacts

But I try not to mean harm to anyone, im just trying to say that im ok with being blind in one eye, and i feel I can still live a comfortable life with one eye

My sister, who isn't blind or visually impaired at all, was the one who told me it was offensive, so I wanted to get some other people's opinion on it

If it is offensive, I'm sorry :(

Edit: I also do want to say that I also have astigmatism and an optic nerve abnormality, but I left both out, as they weren't too serious, and I want to say thank you for your guys' support :)

People's offense is their own problem and not yours. You do you. It's your comfort and your disability. People choosing to take that personally is a reflection of their own lack of growth.

Don't apologize.

Ok! I won't!
Just thank you so much :)

I mean this in the best possible way here but, you know, since I have things to do in life other than hyperventolate at shit I don't like ;) what you or others choose to do doesn't matter to me as long as you're not bothering others or whatever. We're two different people, different perspectives.
A friendly tip, please don't get worked up over trying not to offend people. Jokes are one thing, i make jokes too and not everyone's receptive to those, but there's a point where it just becomes ridiculousness. Personally, I think people that don't go through what we go through need to shut their uneducated asses up and stop trying to speak for us, or tell us what we need to be offended by. Blind playthrough...

No it is not offensive. Maybe if you go blind this is a good attitude. This will help you adjust and adapt even.

I think many sighted people take ofense for us which is a bit funny for sure.

I wouldn't call it offensive at all. I actually struggled with something similar. I have, among other things, very strong photophobia. Because of this, even though I have relatively good "eye chart vision" looking at things really really hurts. I was slowly learning to use tools like audio description or screen readers of a cane, but I was discouraged by my sighted peers because I wasn't "blind enough" to be allowed to use them. It was only until one day at the mall with a friend of mine who was completely blind that I began to accept myself. See, I was having one of my many photophobia headaches and had to sit down, and my friend sat down next to me, and he asked me what photophobia was like. I tried to explain the pain that comes with being around bright colors or the throbbing caused by computer or TV screens or the strange urge to turn lights off, only to find that your migraine produces lights of its own and you can never get it to be quite dark enough. After explaining this, he asked me, "have you tried...not seeing?" I was so confused. What do you mean not seeing? I already have terrible vision! I told him about my attempts at using a cane and screen reader and about the struggles I was having. He lauged and told me something I will never forget, "People like you and I are some of the few people who are allowed to not see. Why not take advantage?" I had never thought of it that way, and it honestly changed my perspective on blindness entirely.

As for it being offensive... Now, I don't know your sister, but I have the sneaking suspicion that she isn't very involved in the blind community. A lot of sighted people assume that we spend most of our time envying sighted folks, or that we constantly mope about not being able to see. However, this is hardly ever the case. Most of us see our visual impairment the way we see hair! A lot of people with straight hair wish they had wavy or curly hair, but this doesn't make it offensive to people with different hair types. Sure, if someone told me they envied or wanted straight hair, I wouldn't be able to relate, because I am looking at the situation from the other side, but offensive? No. Not really.

Hope that helps!

Ye it really did! Im sorry you had to go through that, and thank you so much!

Not at all offensive. It's your life and your vision. Power to you!

The only thing I would think would be offensive was the lady who purposely blinded herself cause she has that weird mental illness where people feel they need to remove body parts and stuff. And even then that lady had a legit issue.

I am not sure how we would know that about you anyway.

No offense, but your sister sounds like someone who gets offended on behalf on many groups that she has little experience with.

To be honest, I don't think a lot of us consider losing sight in only one eye to be anywhere close to being blind. Yes, there will be a transition but you can live quite a normal life with only one eye.

We can be a thin skinned lot but I doubt you would offend many people with your outlook.

Ah ok!

It sounds like you have accepted with might be inevitable.

Why should that be offensive?

I’ve got Stargardt’s and am 100% on the same page as you. Like, would probably prefer not having begun losing my vision, but now that I have it’s not like I can do anything to stop it. For me, it’s just a situation where you’re dealt your cards in life, and acknowledging that truth doesn’t make you offensive or wrong.

I am sighted with RoP, Strabismus etc and i get what you mean. I want to preserve the sight I can and the things that have become worse are hard/scary, but the inconsistencies is what I hate. Especially when I started struggling more, it was hard to not be frustrated and just wish I could get to wherever I would end up visually. I appreciate how my eye doctors are working to help my vision, but it is exhausting feeling like you’re always adapting.

I have cataracts in one eye and literally the only reason I’m going to get surgery is because my family wants me to. I have severe anxiety about eye surgery and know that I could live a very full life with only half my vision. /shrug

I’m a sighted person with nystagmus and ocular albinism as well as just generally poor vision not really VI tier though luckily, so I can only really speak from my experiences with those, I hate having them and they are a pain, I get headaches and migraines from looking at lights coming from things like screens and when it’s sunny outside, personally I have have an easier time looking at stuff with one eye closed especially screens and monitors and I’ve trained myself to just keep one eye closed when using electronics so I feel you.

Tbh I don’t know why your sister would thinks it’s offensive, it’s your body and losing your sight in that eye is something you might have happen so honestly accepting it and being fine with it is probably the best thing you can do.

I can only speak as a sighted person with really poor vision rather than a VI, but I think I'd be ok with it too. Maybe cos a friend growing up was fully blind, maybe because through my child's VI I know the support, help and it's so normal to me now, so many people we know are VI or families with VI kids.
