Seeking Blind Students for Canvas Accessibility UX Survey (self.Blind)
submitted by EricaHagman
Hi there r/Blind !

I am a master’s candidate in the Psychology program at Eastern Washington University. I am writing this post in hopes that it can assist me in finding participants for my thesis. I am conducting an IRB-approved user experience study on the learning management system, Canvas. I am particularly interested in the accessibility of Canvas, specifically for blind and low vision students. As a blind person myself, I know firsthand how difficult and inaccessible navigating academia can be.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older and must have experience with the learning management system, Canvas. The study will take between 20 and 30 minutes to complete. Participants may enter a separate raffle drawing on completion of the survey to win one of three $25 Amazon gift cards as compensation for participating.

Blind students make up such a small percentage of the overall student population and so I am reaching out to you all at r/blind to find more blind and low vision students who are willing to participate in a survey that could potentially help our community. I believe that the information ascertained from this study will be invaluable in understanding accessibility in the online learning environment.

You might want to make sure you get users of all different kinds: Windows laptops with JAWS, windows laptops with NVDA, iPhones with VoiceOver or the enlarging text, Androids with their Talkback feature, and don't even get me started on all the Braille notetakers! You should make sure all these different variables are examined in your study, because there might be a bug someone encounters on an iPhone that they don't encounter using anything else, and it could get overlooked if no one with an iPhone participates in your study. Just because something's accessible on one device doesn't automatically mean said thing will be accessible across all devices with no problems.

Hi there! Thank you for the feedback, that's a really good point! Unfortunately, I can't change the survey format or add any questions because it has already gone through the IRB approval process. I will definitely keep your comment in mind and discuss it when I get to my conclusion and topics for future studies. Thanks again!

I'll be honest, having to deal with these long format image descriptions is a massive turn-off for me. I navigate Canvas using headings and landmarks and don't know how it looks. What I can tell you is that the main stuff is easy to access, but the Canvas inbox is next to impossible to use with NVDA and Firefox. The assignment submission page is also very cluttered. Submitting a reply to a discussion is also difficult because the text field is contained inside of an application frame. I can't simply navigate to it using form fields, and sometimes I get stuck inside of it with no way out. The hardest thing about Canvas is that every instructor organizes their course differently, making getting started in a new course an exercise in frustration.

Hey! This comment and feedback is so helpful, thank you! I must admit, I have never written image descriptions before and I perhaps got carried away with describing them...sorry! Do you have any suggestions for what a better image description would sound like? Your last point about the differing organizational structures of Canvas classrooms depending on the instructor is so pertinent and something that I thought would be a big factor in accessibility issues. Thank you again for giving such honest and thoughtful feedback!

I will take your survey but have no issues with canvas.

Hey, that's important feedback, so thank you!

Not a problem completed it. Then lost the page and never got the google doc but yeah..... haha! So if you want to give me that it would be great feel free to pm. But if not that’s okay if you want to talk about things let me know. I taught canvas and how to navigate it for a bit. I think essentially some who are not technical will struggle with canvas but they will probably struggle with a lot of other programs too.

I can definitely send you the link. Thanks again for taking the survey, I need all the blind participants I can get! And I might just take you up on that offer!

Sure I may have access to my old canvas don’t have any classes on there but we’ll see been a few years since I’ve used it but yeah. More like a year and a half.

But yeah. Feel free send over a message and the link. Have you thought of contacting disability offices and asking them to maybe send it out to their students.. I know a lot of colleges or community colleges uses it.
