Does anyone here play dungeons and dragons?(self.Blind)
submitted by Ferninja
I'm sighted and I've been playing dungeons and dragons for years and I always wondered; do blind people enjoy that game too? Or it not dnd specifically what other sorts of story telling games do you enjoy?
How do you reconcile playing a sighted character and are there any obstacles you run into when things are described to you visually?
Lastly if you do play, do you dm? I have to constantly keep notes and reference the texts throughout play so I was wondering what would your process be?
Thanks and I look forward to your answer.

Yup. You should check out https://knightsofthebraille.com/.
Different people play and DM in different ways. Theater of the mind is basically assumed.

I wouldn't say I'm that knowledgeable, but I've heard of games like that for Amazon Alexa.
Check out Cursed Painting and Dark Citadel.
There's also The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which has been released on all platforms except the kitchen sink, but only because there are no Alexa enabled sinks, as of yet.

Yep, I love it. Before my sight got worse, I downloaded the character sheet in PDF and used Notability on my iPad to fill it out. I struggled reading the dice and it was often easier for others to read it for me. Now, I use a character sheet in spreadsheet form and use Siri or my boyfriend to make dice rolls (he runs games through Discord). And I’m interested in getting.Braille or tactile dice. I love description, but I don’t like ambient noise or music as I find it distracting (probably not a blind thing).

I play. They have braille dice you can buy now, but I typically use an online roller. I also use my siri on my phone to roll. I do theater of the mind, but also have experimented with a battle grid I made in excel. No obstacles to playing a sighted character, just as I have no trouble reading a book or watching a movie as a sighted character.

I've been playing for about two years now and I've been really enjoying it.
My main struggles have been finding dice that are big enough or clear enough for me to read the numbers and reading in general
For the dice, I have my friends tell me what the number is if I dont have access to my die. I usually use a black and yellow set for the high contrast.
For reading, I bring an electronic magnifier to read my handbook if needed and I take a picture of my character sheet on my phone to zoom in. I always forget my stats 😅

I am visually impaired and I do play DND as the DM. I was only able to play as a PC once, for I don’t no a lot of people playing as the DM in my area. I used to run Weekly sessions for two small groups, but since the pandemic we haven’t played a lot since then. I have a compressed optic nerve which prevents me from recognizing written tax or images, as well as any type of digital screen such as monitors and tvs. Honestly I think I’m not really good at it. I use the screen either in my laptop, but I mostly try to memorize the module whenever I DM for my players.
