For O&M instructors or those with experience: What are some of the benefits and drawbacks of using a blindfold or occlusion in O&M training? (self.Blind)
submitted by coolcaelin123
There doesn't seem to be much research into this, but what are the benefits or drawbacks to using a blindfold or occlusion in O&M training?

Even if someone has stable vision at say, 10%, would it still make sense? How would be beneficial?

Let's hear your thoughts:

It is to prepare for more vision lost and to understand how a cane works and what maximum benefit a cane can give if there is no other input to familiarize someone.

The idea is to fully rely on the cane and environmental cues. Navigation is quite different without any visual input.

People just have trouble learning the skills when they can “cheat”. Once you learn the skills, then the blindfold comes off. As a teacher, I will roll with whatever my clients want. I do spend a lot of clients who refuse to try blindfold, and generally, their skill acquisition suffers for it, and they are less well adjusted usually because they are newer and the resistance to blindfold is tied up in fear of blindness which is something to work through in orientation and mobilty. So in short? It is all good, as an insider, I recommend just going for the blindfold

Those of us who encourage the use of learning shades are not doing it because we are against people using their sight. We encourage the training to happen under shades because the cane skills need to be developped. The vision is impaired, and it hinnders the person's traveling because they have the impairment and they haven't received training. Once the person completes their training, they can take the shades off and use their vision in functional ways, with the understanding that their are non-visual skills which will suit their needs better in certain tasks.
I believe that the Structure Discovery Method is a supperior way of traveling.

Non-visual perspective obtained through non-visual training. This can only be learned in this way. Having the ability to visualize impacts this learning but can still aid in developing empathy and understanding.
