Are you grateful to be working any type of job since a lot of people who deal with with eye problems are not able to find any type of work ?

Honestly when it came to the jobs I've had, yes I was extremely grateful as most places didn't give me an interview, and thoes that did were great, but I could tell when I walked in with a cane, they would have a certain reaction that told me I was wasting my time there.

What this all meant is that when I did find a job that was willing to hire me, I would give it everything I had and then some, feeling I needed to prove myself over other hires, to be taken seriously, and keep the job for as long as possible.

This isn't how it should be, but it really appears that this is the reality for most employers.

Yeah I know what you mean even when people in our community have all kinds of certifications and degrees sometimes it’s still not enough. Also I feel like jobs in the private sector don’t have loyalty to there employees and it’s even easier to be fired there which can stress even people with perfect eyesight out never mind when you have a eye condition.

I am very fortunate in my job. I work with Developmentally Disabled Adults in a day services setting. I am legally blind, and since I love in a small town, and that my dad, also legally blind works there, I was given a chance. I don't do anything in the computer at work, and can fill out our daily paperwork. I do a lot of indoor and one on one activities with my clients. I love my job. I don't think I would be working in a place like this in a larger area, because there's more folks with college educations, drivers licenses and full vision. I used to work at our local subway, and had the computer point of sale screen memorized so I did not need to read much. We also strictly enforced "a place for everything and everything in its place" or "don't move stuff around or the blind lady will yell at you" so that I didn't have to spend time going through the freezers looking for food. Worked well. But it murdered my soul, and I'm much much happier now.

I’m glad that you were able to find a job. In my town there only seems to be retail type jobs and no transportation outside of town so it’s tough to find work that pays more than minimum wage. It can be hard to survive financially and that’s why I still have to live with my parents because I could not afford to be on my own other wise.
