Any video game playable by those who are blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by strangehoney
I have a 14-year old student who is totally blind but smart as a whip. He recently started to become very interested in video games and is always asking me if there is anything he can play aside from the blindfold games apps on IOS. His parents are willing to buy him a console and he is just starting to get good with the laptop. Is there anything accessible out there at all?

https://caniplaythat.com/ - they review games from the perspectives of a variety of games with disabilities, including blind and low vision gamers.

Fighting games are notoriously blind friendly, with blind players able to beat sighted players through the audio cues. There are some blind gamers on YouTube that explain how they play a variety of other games too.

The PlayStation 4 and 5 has the Last Of Us Part II. It’s accessible to the blind. I have an Xbox One S and I play Madden and mortal Combat.

Like really blind or just extremely visually impaired? I saw this one guy who plays Minecraft at low FOV and gets super close to the screen, also there's a narrator. I'm pretty sure it's on Bedrock edition so they could probably play on console, but it's definitely on Java edition which they could play on a laptop, especially with optifine (the vanilla client for Java edition can be hard to run on low end computers).

If he has a screen reader (and Linux would help), there are dozens of ASCII-only roguelike games he could play. And they require smarts. I'm trying to make my own roguelike accessible enough for screen readers, but it's one of the more complex out there, so not sure how plausible playing it on a screen reader is. However, the simpler roguelikes are played by many sight-impaired persons with gusto.

Two links, Linux not needed for these, I think:
