I have really bad eyesight. Actually had to stare at at a self checkout within inches to see because glasses were foggy. I only go places I am familiar with now because I can’t see and don’t have coaching. How can I contribute to the blind community (self.Blind)

Can you use your phone's camera to act as a digital magnifier to help you see something further away? Open the camera and zoom in (or use Magnifier on iPhones).
Are you able to get O&M training? They can work on teaching you new skills to help travel to unfamiliar locations.

Have you been to an opthalmologist to get checked out to make sure you don't have something more than just poor eyesight working against you? I felt the same before finding out I had stargardts. I didn't even know I had blindspots until they were pointed out to me

I use an app called “Be My Eyes” a lot for times like those. The only time I can’t use it is when I’m trying to find my glasses!

It has a network of over a million volunteers and works very much like FaceTime where you tell the person what you need then they watch your video to assist you.

It's really sweet that there are volunteers willing to help out like that, I've spent so long just doing my own thing. I knew there were groups like the Lions club but I didn't realise apps like these were a thing.
