Visual impaired and interested in medical school(self.Blind)
submitted by Busy_Blueberry_966
Hello! I am visually impaired / legally blind due to ocular albinism. I've gotten through most of school and life with fairly-minimal accommodations, but I cannot drive and struggle to see things in my daily life (writing on a board or screen, small details if not extremely close, etc.). I am currently a masters student in clinical mental health counseling and I'm about to finish my degree in August. While I believe counseling is a great career, I have recently been thinking about how I am far more interested in a career in medicine. I think part of the reason I didn't pursue medicine sooner is because of concerns regarding my vision. I am currently looking at post-bacc premed programs to potentially enroll in in the next year or so, but I am wondering what I need to be considering as a visually impaired student. I believe I can do this and I recognize that there will definitely be significant barriers.
I guess I'm wondering if there are others out there who are visually impaired or legally blind in the medical field (or looking to go into it). I would love any advice / recommendations or to connect with folks in a similar situation.

I actually looked into this a few years ago. From what I found, it’s virtually impossible to become a traditional doctor or nurse if you’re legally blind, however there are some branches of the medical field you could still do. It was a while ago and I don’t remember which exactly, but maybe you could post on r/doctors or whatever and see what they say.

I went into public health/health policy. It's not a frontline medical career, but it is researching evidence based medicine and working with physicians to improve guidelines for the treatment of conditions.

Hi, there are quite a few visually impaired doctors out there - I’m one of them in the UK. Tomorrow (Feb 21st) NOAH are hosting a webinar with doctors/med students with albinism: https://www.albinism.org/NOAH-Connections/#doctors

You should check out NOAH, the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation. I know several doctors (one of whom in particular is very, very well-accomplished), medical students and nursing students who are legally blind with albinism, so it’s definitely doable! Feel free to message me and I can put you in touch with some people :)

I’ve heard of blind doctors before, but I don’t have any articles or information to share right now. You might want to look into psychiatry.
