Okay, rant for the day, overspill from last night....
So I got up early yesterday morning, just after 11:00 - well it was a lazy Sunday morning!
So showered, lifted the white towels from the bathroom, stripped the bed and took the white fitted valance, and a white tee shirt I had on when out a walk the other day to run through the washing machine.
As I’m fussy, I had decided to toss in a scoop of white deoxygenating bleach to whiten the whites. Being the smart, intelligent person I are, I checked the drum and sure enough, there was my navy blue zip up hoodie. Removing it and throwing in the white load, I filled the washing powder in and fabric softener and hit start on a 60deg C wash. Going about my other household duties, hoovering, cleaning, burning rubbish, taking out the rubbish to the bin etc.
After the machine beeped that it had finished, I transferred the load to my tumble. Again, being that smart intelligent person, I lifted out my tee shirt to avoid it reducing to a doll sized top!
Ran the dryer and that night lifted all out to take back up to the bathroom and iron the valance.
.........I obviously had forgotten to double check in the bloody washing machine and lo and behold, there was a hand towel from the kitchen....... effing charcoal grey!
So, not sure what colour my items turned out, but they will have to suffice until this weekend to be run through again with the bleach to whiten my now off white whites!
...thoughts on buying total white outfits, bedclothing and towels?!!

It's enough to make one cry!! I feel your pain.

Don't buy whites. Nothing in white. It's Just Not Worth It! No matter how much you oxy or bleach, the stuff will never ever be white like it was when new. Clothes, towels, linens...it will all fail you. My advice is to choose a new favorite color and run with it.

As a blind person who is 52, my whole life's experiences with white things have proven to be difficult and disappointing. Even down to white undies and socks. They are just not worth it. Whites and blind people just don't go together well, LOL.

Do you have another favorite color? And I hope it's not black, because black is nothing but a magnet for white lint. Even black carpets. They are the worst!

Furiously Googling for GreyBlueBrownish clothing and household linen!! 😂
I always pride myself as a 47y old domesticated male, I keep my whites separated, just the odd bastard-ing item Some idiot has put in the machine!
......oh wait! Currently living alone! 👀👀 😂
Just pretend it’sthe latest earthy designer colour! Robert Plant’s Tie dye on the highway springs to memory! 🤣
blackberrybunny 2 points 2y ago
LOL! You are quite funny and clever!

I know we have all messed up a load of whites with an errant non-white item. I totally ruined my husband's underwear and socks once when I put them in with blue jeans. A long time ago. A lesson I NEVER forgot! I actually cried when I told him what I did, and he just hugged me and called me a silly girl. To him, it didn't matter. No one was going to see his socks and underwear anyways.... and after a few washes, those items were white again. Not bright white, but not blue anymore. :-)
Have a great week, friend!!

Hahaha, thanks and well saying you don’t know me!!! 😂 😂
It always happens. And usually when in a rush. I remember standing one time at the hob in the kitchen, heating upp lentil soup to put in a flask for my lunch at work. I had thrown some bacon into the Actifrier, so I could chop it up through the soup. I also had a pan of Ready Break (like ground down porridge) on for my breakfast. I had music on, kettle boinling for my coffee and then started to chop the bacon into my saucepan of soup... filled the flask, sealed it and put out my breakfast.
.....bacon pieces in Ready Break actually is quite nice I have to say! Never had it again after, but was a surpirse that morning..... though I just had Lentil soup for lunch 😔
Take care, and wishing you the best along with whitest whites! 😂
blackberrybunny 2 points 2y ago
Haha, that is great! I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally put one ingredient into the wrong pot, to discover a surprise at the end.....
Once I went to a breakfast buffet. I couldn't see ANYTHING I was doing. I'm partially sighted. I got some pancakes on my plate, and then ladled on huge helpings of what I thought was syrup. Topped it all with scoops of what I though was whipped cream. Got back to my table to discover the syrup was actually pure melted butter, and the whipped cream was whipped butter! OMG!!! I will never forget that......

Yeah, I was going to say. I own almost nothing that can't just be thrown in a wash with everything else, except the natural fibre cotton stuff. I wouldn't buy only white, I'd never buy white, and then it's never a problem!
blackberrybunny 1 points 2y ago
I think all of the white towels I have ever owned in my lifetime came from a hotel. Yep, they were stolen! LOL (Who hasn't done that??) :-D
Apocalyptias 3 points 2y ago
Rest assured, us sighted folk don't have any more luck with white either!
There is a 100% chance of spilling staining liquid on anything that isn't jet black, mark my words!

I have a slightly different problem. My previous guide dog was black, so I had a lot of darker items and no problem with what I wore. My current boy is extremely pale yellow and sheds like a snowstorm (part Golden, it's all his tail!!) ...I've given up.

I feel your pain! This is where I struggle with a guide dog. my boy is a black Lab. I grew up on a farm and any dogs we had were outside dogs. He is of course inside, though he isn’t allowed upstairs. But he casts quite a bit at times. I bought a Furminator, which helped, it like is really fine and trims the hair too.
So I try to keep the tumbleweeds at a minimum! 😂 and have the coach brush and rubber spiky hand glove thingie! I also had to get him a new bed at the most of £100, a 4” memory foam bed, the last one was not as thick and he started to fold it over to lie on it, and the wee shit kept digging at it until he ripped the covers, and at over £30 a throw, I thought it easier to buy a thicker bed.
SPOILT!!

I never had dogs growing up so my first guide was my first dog (now on my third). Prince caused tumbleweeds around the house no matter what I tried, but in harness/shedding on my clothes wasn't an issue. Zeke barely shed at all - I'd kept Prince and you'd never have known I had another dog as the tumbleweeds stayed the same size. Romeo... I've tried every brush, gadget and gizmo I can get my hands on. Zoom groom gets some of it, the spiky glove gets some of it, the furminator gets less of it. On a whim I tried one of my old brushes that didn't work for me - first brush that works for his tail. He doesn't shed much when we're out (unless he's super excited i.e. vet) but my clothes... yeah I give up. Tried a couple of things that you put in the washing machine that are meant to collect hair and they didn't work.

I feel you on the spoiled. He sleeps on my bed with me, has his own bed that fortunately he's gentle with. He's also got another 2 beds in my lounge that weren't as expensive thankfully. He spends most of his time on the couch - it needs to be replaced anyway, which is why he's allowed up on it.

I've also got cats and guinea pigs. I'm not covered head to toe in fur and hay, but there's definitely a strand here and there. Actually ended up buying different materials for clothes that are less likely to have fur cling. Around the house I'll still wear my polar fleece jacket, which is a magnet for it, but I try to keep it down in public lol.

Lol, I really need to get to sleep as I’ve a virtual workshop to run tomorrow for work.
Should see if the “Suck & Cut” from Wayne’s world ever was released! 🤣 🤣
There was a girl I did the residential with when I was training for my first GD. She groomed her dog on the hotel bed.... I shit you not!
The waitress at the restaurant in the morning wondered if she had slept with the dog and with her clothes on.... she was covered head to toe with cream hairs.
Ick! ick! ick! ick! ick!
If he is on your current sofa, I would not bother buying a new one, as he’ll be on that too! 😂 Mine tried that game after I went to bed, he’d get on the sofa, lie on it, and get off before I came down in the morning.
I twigged onto him, so had to booby trap the sofa! Everything from coat hangers etc covering it!
..but yeah, I threaten to shave my boy as I don’t where the hell the hair all comes from. Like how is it when you brush the little shits, you could stuff a mattress, and yet there is always hairs on the floor everyday you hoover? Like, either/or ...on the floor and none on their coat, or in their coat but not on the floor!
...okay, I’ll probably not sleep now thinking of all this.... thank you very much!!!!!
Lol! Take care, and I’m guessing you are UK based too.
SeptemberJoy 3 points 2y ago
OMG grooming on the bed?? I can't even. Mine's got his own blanket on the bed so I can just chuck that in the wash as needed and keep things fairly contained. I've also threatened to shave him. My usual comment is I've got enough fur to make a puppy. So glad I got rid of the carpet - much easier to deal with fur on tiles.

I'm not too worried about when I eventually replace it. He's 99% on asking permission to get up on things - like if he gets off the bed during the night he won't get back up unless I wake up and invite him. Hasn't ever tried to get up on friend's furniture when we visit, etc. Unless I'm a twit and tell him to go for it should be fine so it'll be training myself more than him! Also clarifying he didn't wreck this one, it was old when I inherited it from a friend who moved and it had already been shredded by her cat - my cats have added to that... Part of the reason I've allowed/encouraged it is my place is tiny and it's easier.

Hoping you've hit the hay by now and wake up to a funny story about my retired (now passed) first boy. Things to note - he had back problems so thicker/softer = better, and at the time he was likely in the early stages of dementia (he was a happy boy, just ... brain not worky). I'd suspected he had been getting up on an armchair when I was out as it was warm when I returned. No other proof until the day I left the house only to reenter a minute later as I'd forgotten something. Why is there a giant black lump on the chair... Ah. It was another old chair slowly on its way out so I let him be. The hilarious part was he had frozen in place as if my vision was based on movement and thus he was invisible.

I'm in Australia :) good luck with your workshop!

I’d recommend a roomba for shedding.
spacelibby 6 points 2y ago
I don't think rumbas are certified as guide animals. Although, now that I've said that...
bradley22 1 points 2y ago
Haha, i mean picking up the hair.
SeptemberJoy 1 points 2y ago
Thanks for the suggestion :) I'll look into it.
bradley22 2 points 2y ago
No problem :)

That is sad. I have also white bedding and white t-shirts for sleeping. The rest of my clothes, towels, backpacks are black-navy-gray. This works for me as both white and black/dark have good contrast. And they work together quite well.

But of course I died a white t-shirt once to light greenish and wore it several times until I realized...

Colors? Well, that stresses me out when it comes to washing. Can I wash light blue and light green together... what about that red scarf... or the yellow t-shirt... Any kind of pattern makes it even worse.
1BlindNinja [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Typically colours are safe in a 40deg C wash, it is the 60deg C washes that run the colours.
I’m always careful of very strong dark colours for the first wash, jeans, navy socks etc. If I have light colours, cream, light yellow, etc I will throw in along with whites in a 40deg wash. I’m a total, so it makes it all fun!
I had bought Wayaround buttons, I find them very good for ID-ing clothes, I stitch the button to the inside label then send the code to it from my phone. Using Tap Tap SEE/Seeing AI or similar to colour check the item first. 😊
kramwam 1 points 2y ago
Never heard about those buttons, but they sound very useful. Technology is definitely a huge help for us.
1BlindNinja [OP] 2 points 2y ago
If you search the appstore for WayAround, it has the details within. They also have stickers and clips, both metal backed and ordinary, as it is a bit like a RFI button, so your phone writes the description you type to the button/label and then you can read it using the app too. Very useful, washing machine, tumble and steam iron proof! Just watch the finger tips when stitching on! 😂
bradley22 3 points 2y ago
I’d really recommend a roomba for hoovering. The only issue is putting it on the charger but once it’s done, by a sighted person or if you can do it, go for it, it’s amazing and even goes back to its charger.
1BlindNinja [OP] 1 points 2y ago
But I love hoovering! Like, actually, like ironing, mildly therapeutic!
Have often thought of getting a mini leaf vac, you know the one where the engine and collection bag is all in a backpack arrangement? Mount onto dog’s back and attach hose to tail! Could be adapted to also suck up after he poops too!
....God, I should be an inventor!!! 😂 😂
bradley22 2 points 2y ago
It’s like me with washing up, I could do that all day :)
1BlindNinja [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Funny, I also love cleaning. Last year I took out my industrial high pressure washer to wash the yard and along a dashed wall outside. I was being systematic and holding the lance near the nozzle and going back and forth to wash all the moss off the top of the wall. One lapse of concentration and my finger passed in front of the water jet...... totally sliced the lump of skin clean off (no pun intended!). Good thing was it didn’t bleed, so I could keep going. Made feeling along the dashed wall all that more tactile, as where I had no skin/flesh it was super sensitive! 😂 😂
Just don’t put your fingers in front of a +2500psi water jet!
bradley22 2 points 2y ago
Ah, the joys of cleaning :)
