Suggested kitchen tools for my blind roommate (self.Blind)
submitted by asdflkjhzxcvqwer
Hi all,

As the title says, I'm looking for suggestions for kitchen tools/gadgets for my blind roommate. She didn't cook at all before, but we gradually began cooking together, and she's since overcome her fear of the stove. It's very exciting!

I'm moving out soon, and thought it would be cute to get her a kitchen present since we spent a lot of time in the kitchen amid the winter pandemic. I was considering buying her a cast iron skillet, but then I thought maybe this wouldn't be the right gift since the handles aren't heat resistant and it might be more of a hassle for her to use.

She has recently purchased some spatula tongs to help her flip things in the pot, as well as some pot holders that cover her wrists. What else can I get her?

Y/n on the cast iron skillet? Has anyone used a talking digital scale they love? Something else that's made a huge difference in your cooking life?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I'm also partial to the cast iron skillet because it was in Emily in Paris, which we binge watched like idiots earlier this year.

I love my air fryer ... I use it for every meal I cook for my family. Also maybe a talking thermometer ... The toughest thing is being able to tell if meat is fully cooked.

Both solid nominations, thank you!

Seconded for the thermometer. $1 is excellent and their customer service is wonderful.

Love my talking thermometer. I was cooking on vacation and was sad I didn't have Mr. Thermometer with me to provide helpful advice at a critical stage.

Get her a set of metal measuring spoons, and bend them all so that the spoon is at a 90 degree angle with the handle. Or as close as you can get it. She can use those for measuring out liquids. It’s much easier for me to lift a curved measuring spoon out of the liquid than pouring it in. This way I can get the right amount without it overflowing when I’m pouring. This changed my cooking experience.

This makes so much sense, thank you!

I never thought about doing this. Been learning how to balance common spoons without spilling liquids, which is a nice trick by itself.

My siblings and I got my mom a braille measuring cup set that goes as large as 2 cups and as small as a pinch and dash for the measuring spoons. It has probably fifteen pieces. She has appreciated it and uses it almost every day. We also got her a... Well it's a plastic knife? But it cuts almost anything without cutting her skin. I'm not sure the material or how it works besides magic, lol. That she doesn't like but my nephew was able to use it when he was very little, around five, safely. He adores cooking.

There's a glass disc you can get on maxi aids before that will rattle when the water is boiling! It's perfect for making pasta.

Extra long oven mitts that go up to the elbow are also amazing.

A large display kitchen timer or a tactile one.

Silicone baking sheets are also great for easy cleaning

Ooh I haven't heard of these glass discs before, that sounds awesome. All great suggestions though, thank you!

Consider an electric kettle so she won't have to boil water/ eggs on the stove.
asdflkjhzxcvqwer [OP] 2 points 2y ago
She already has one but I didn't even think about using it to boil eggs! This is very smart

Why not a grill or something like that griddle I think it’s also called a george forman or cuisianard or something like that I have the latter. I think silicon gloves is also nice.

So she technically has a little grill area on her stove. Do you find the George Foreman one easier to use? We haven't used the grill on her stove yet, so interested to get your thoughts.

Yes I enjoy using it quite a lot. I do a lot of stuff on it from bacon to sausage to burgers to a lot of stuff the oven and grill are my favorite honestly. Need to do the stove top more myself.never tried the ones on the stove but this one has a lid so does both sides. It’s very nice.

I’m not sure what you mean by grill area on her stove but I love my George foreman.

Okay awesome, thanks!

Take her to Target and get her some nice spatulas. Having something solid that gives me actual feedback through the handle as to whether I picked up something, or if it flopped off, made a big difference for me. I found something with a sturdy handle and thin paddle works best for flipping meats.

Ooh okay, good to know, thanks!

Regarding the cast iron skillet, there are inexpensive silicon pan handle covers that are made exactly for this purpose. They cannot go INTO the oven, but can be placed on a hot cast iron pan on the stovetop and they work perfectly to protect your hand from the heat. Similarly, there are quilted ones such as those you would find at Applebees where are you get sizzling fajitas and there is a quilted sheath that is put on the hot pan handle to protect customers.
