Help with navigating big institutes (self.Blind)
submitted by lennarttr
Hey,
we are a group of students from Denmark. Currently we are trying to understand your problems with navigating big institutes, like airports, train stations or hospitals. As for example guide dogs are not allowed in most hospitals we then aim to find a suitable solution to that problem based on your suggestions, so you can navigate with more confidence in those locations. If you would like to contribute to our research by answering 4 questions, it is very much appreciated and will hopefully come back to you one day :)

1. What’s your form of visual impairment?

2. How often do you visit big institutes, like train stations, hospitals, universities, event locations, etc. ?

3. How do you approach navigation in those spaces, when they are unfamiliar to you?

4. Do you have a preference on how navigation could be improved for you personally?

Thanks for your attention!

Are we only speaking about Denmark? I’m in the US and my guide dog absolutely accompanies me to medical appointments. (Not surgery, obviously, but besides that.)

We just want to gather as much information as possible, so it’s good to know that you can do that in the US

1. Totally blind no vision or light perception at all.

2.a lot. Not pandemic like very frequently. I think in english large venues work better then institutions. Institutions in english means like. Universities or research places, or some sort of organizations.

3. Start to explore and learn them ask for help or directions if walking with someone try to memorize how the layout is.

4.this has been addressed over and over again and a beacon system is probably a good way but a lot of places don’t actually want to implement it. Maybe landmarks by users. Or something..... hmm....

Thanks for your answers. I’m aware there are ways to improve navigation, but as you implied, unfortunately for a lot of places it doesn’t bring enough value to implement them. May it be laziness or economical reasons. Beacon sounds interesting, what exactly do you mean by “landmark by users”?

No problem if you want to ask more question or talk about it by voice feel free we should probably set up something if you want to talk or can message and ask questions.

Some sort of shock collar for when you arrange to meet people and they don't turn up and don't answer their phone?

I'm only half kidding.
