Martial arts that can be practiced by totally blind people, (besides Judo or wrestling?) (self.Blind)
submitted by Motya105
Could anyone recommend any Martial Arts that have less of an amphasis on grappling? The blind people I know who practice Martial Arts, mainly practice those where close contact with the opponent is required, such as Judo, since they’re easier to do, but I’m wondering whether there are any alternatives to grapling-centric martial arts that are accessible. Is Karate a possibility? Thanks for any advice!

Thanks for your insight! Do you practice other Martial Arts besides Judo?
ukifrit 2 points 2y ago
no. As I am a competitor I couldn't balance judo with anything else. But I'm very interested in aikido.

Thank you. I’ll look into it. Is there any particular style of Jiu Jitsu that works best for totally blind people?

Probably brazilian jujitsu. Also very practical as a martial art.

I’m blind in one eye and I’ve done mma my whole life. I know it’s not completely the same but after you practice a lot it becomes second nature to be able to “see” what is going on

When you say, “To see what’s going on,” do you mean sensing it with your other senses, to compensate for your limited vision, or getting used to using your limited vision in the context of MMA? Thanks for any clarification.

I mean that you are able to kind of use your other senses and think of the natural movements of other people to compensate for the lack of eyesight. Mma and all martial arts are a lot like chess. So you can kind of predict what your opponent is going to do and use that to your advantage. That prediction is what helped me a lot in learning the art and becoming good at it. I hope that clarifies!

How would sparring work for a totally blind person?
BlueRock956 2 points 2y ago
For me it was punch and knee while keeping very close contact.

I practiced Kung Fu for a long time. I am not blind, but I would totally say it is possible to do it.
