How can I teach myself Braille? (self.Blind)
submitted by K-R-Rose
So I’m going to be moving to the city soon and I think knowing Braille is going to make my life easier in a lot of ways. How can I teach it to myself? Learning the dot patterns are not my issue. I’m legally blind so I can study the patterns visually. It’s the tactile aspect I’m having an issue with. I can’t go anywhere to learn, and I obviously can’t drive and no one is willing to get me there. Public transit doesn’t exist in my town from what I can tell, so what are my options?

Hadley has a course where they mail things to your home - does this help? $1

From my understanding it is free, it says on one of their main pages:

"A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Hadley relies on contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations to fund its programs "

Do you know off the top of your head if it costs money? I tried looking but I’m hopeless and can’t figure it out lol

I’ve done it before, all 3 courses are free
K-R-Rose [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Oh really? How long did it take you?

All 3 portions took me 18 months, but this was on top of High School work as well. If you’re not in school right now, it’ll likely be much quicker.

I've taken multiple courses from Hadley and they are free. They provide everything you need for the course (but you need your own audio player for the book on tape cartridge or a USB adapter). If you don't have those, you can get one for free from the NLB:

Okay thank you!

Remember that Braille is felt not seen. None of my sighted teachers could read Braille as fast as I did with my fingers, and they had been trying for longer than I have known it.

That’s what I’m trying to not do. I can read is visually, but that isn’t helpful for me since I want the non-visual way of reading

Hadley is good but also try a light house or other blind organization. Maybe a local one too I think there’s some braille stuff at the lighthouses.
K-R-Rose [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Thank you I will!

Not a problem. They have some sort of braille instructor there I think or someone capable of it.

u/k-r-rose, please circle back after you learn. I have a similar issue where I can visually read OK but need to train my fingers Braille.

Will do! It might not happen for a while though. I have the issue of getting the learning materials into my house with my very judgey parents to deal with
