Blind/visually impaired people of Reddit, what is one thing people believe/say/act about visual impairment that you wish they wouldn’t? (self.Blind)

"You're not blind, why do you have a cane?" When low vision blind users doing their best on their own are called out for not really being blind and think we are trying to get away with something. I wish.
FlamingWhisk 8 points 2y ago
At night I’ve started using a cane because I can’t see a thing and kept falling off curbs. I’ve had people “call me out” saying I saw you at work in front of a computer. Yup me and me 32 font with a carefully placed lamp. I try to explain that vision impairment is a spectrum.
coffee-bear 8 points 2y ago
I relate to this so much. I’ve been using a cane at school and have been made fun of by other students. People wave their hand in front of my face and when I react they laugh or ask are you blind and other comments. I kinda feel like a bit of a fraud for using one as my eyesight is quite good compared to majority of cane users. It makes me regret using a cane even though it does help me be Independent. I just wish people were more educated about disabilities.

Yes, I can totally relate to this 100%. It is annoying, and it feels like they are trying to invalidate us.

Vision impairment is a spectrum, it's not an all or nothing ailment.
AllSharkLivesMatter [OP] 5 points 2y ago
I agree, I can see but I also have patches (if you will) of vision where I cannot
viciousSnowFlake 3 points 2y ago
Same. And a plethora of other vision issues lol. Yay fucked up genes
AllSharkLivesMatter [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Woo hoo lol

That we're going to be very happy or not absolutely fuming when you decide to give up your time, unprompted, to unhelpfully help us.

'Yes I did know where I was going, as I told you.' 'Yes I am now lost, because you grabbed hold of my arm and decided to disorientate me.'
Criptedinyourcloset 5 points 2y ago
I hate this so much. If I need your help, I will ask for it. Don’t just grab my arm and then disorient me. Leave me alone, I don’t want your help and I don’t need it and I’ve said it several times.
tangela19 5 points 2y ago
to me, the bigger issue with this is that they don't just ask, hey, I've got some time, I can walk with you across that street or whatever, and then respect whatever answer is given. As has been stated, being grabbed throws off your alignment, and then pulled across a street worsens that, making it harder to re-acclimate once you're across. Some people genuinely need/appreciate being helped across streets, or to particular places, which is great. But just asking and respecting whatever answer is givenwd solve this whole thing, but that never happens!
bradley22 2 points 2y ago
This! People don’t seam to realise that we don’t need to be thankful for their help.
ChellVaquita 11 points 2y ago
‘How are you typing this if you’re blind?’ - that one is so infuriating people honestly need to educate themselves. Not every blind/visually impaired person can only see black.
Or they just stare blankly at you and refuse to believe you’re blind cause apparently I don’t ‘look’ blind.
peggy2033 5 points 2y ago
Somebody asked that to me and a few other people in a YouTube comments section, the guy didn’t believe us and started saying that we are attention seeking and that we deserved to be blind saying we our useless to society and a bunch of other shit. Lol
Criptedinyourcloset 6 points 2y ago
Do you know those people who say you don’t look blind and even when you explain they refuse to believe you’re blind? Just reply, “well, you don’t look stupid. But you are. “
ChellVaquita 2 points 2y ago
Yes I’ve gotten those same ignorant responses on YouTube comments too. Just ignore them. Let them bask in their own ignorance
K-R-Rose 3 points 2y ago
OH MY GOD I GET THIS ALL THE TIME! I thought it was just me
ChellVaquita 4 points 2y ago
Unfortunately you’re not alone! I’ve had someone snatch my cane off me before and wave it around like it was a wand. This guy was 17 at the time
K-R-Rose 2 points 2y ago
Wow. I- I don’t even know what to say. I think that speaks for itself
ChellVaquita 4 points 2y ago
The worst thing is if you don’t ‘look’ like a blind person, most people will attempt to ridicule simply because they don’t know how to act around you. They tend to become very insecure
Criptedinyourcloset 2 points 2y ago
I just tell those people go look up TTS.
BenandGracie 11 points 2y ago
I wish people wouldn't assume I can sing or play a musical instrament because I am blind. I like listening to music, but I don't have any skill playing it.

The other thing is, I wish people would stop asaing me if I know the blind person that lives in their town or street. I don't know every blind person in a 50 mile radius.
AllSharkLivesMatter [OP] 4 points 2y ago
Sometimes I would get the opposite like they’re shocked that somebody with a visual impairment can play in instrument. Disregarding that there are blind artists like Stevie wonder and Ray Charles
FlamingWhisk 10 points 2y ago
Please don’t speak louder to us. We can hear you just fine.

And if you offer us a seat on the bus and we decline please don’t insist. I stand on one bus route because I can tell by the bumps where I am.
Criptedinyourcloset 3 points 2y ago
Yeah, speaking louder to us is like speaking to a person that speaks another language louder. I have no idea why people do it and it’s completely pointless.
cumpsterfire 2 points 2y ago
Just a side note certain bus companies where I live have started having the next stop read out so you can hear if you're at your stop
FlamingWhisk 1 points 2y ago
And take my headphones out? Lol
ThreeTreesXXII 10 points 2y ago
Most everything. Lots of stuff I could mention here. Mainly, I wish people didn't automatically assume we have to be spoken to like five year olds. Being blind doesn't make a person stupid, and even people with mental disabilities deserve more respect than that.
Pegasaurus8 9 points 2y ago
I was at a music festival and had my ID cane. I also had my sunglasses on (I have retina issues and the lights were super bright).
I was standing there enjoying the concert and a girl to me left asked me “do you know where you are right now?”
I was like “...yeah....”

I guess she thought I was totally blind?...
regardless, it was a MUSIC festival.
AllSharkLivesMatter [OP] 9 points 2y ago
I’ll give you an example… I was waiting to be picked up when a guy thought I was waiting to cross the parking lot. He walked up towards me and asked if I need help crossing the road. I told him no thank you I’m good.
My problem is that he thinks I am a small child or an elderly woman that I need help crossing the street; even if I wanted to cross the parking lot, I can do it in my own.
siriuslylupin6 7 points 2y ago
Oh you’re blind you must be an auditory learner. Sorry nope. Oh blind people can’t be visual or spacial learners and what if I am?
Real_Space_Captain 5 points 2y ago
This is the hardest lesson as a someone going blind. I’m not an auditory person AT ALL. I assumed at first I’d learn to be one as I lost my eye sight...but nope, not how it works.
siriuslylupin6 1 points 2y ago
Hmm... interesting me either what are you?
Real_Space_Captain 2 points 2y ago
I’m visual, I like to be able to look back and quickly read what I need to do or watch a video. I had a coach who always laughed at me because he could explain the instructions to a drill in the most intense level of detail, but if I were first up I’d ask what are we doing. I had to watch people do it before me to understand.

I always wonder if I don’t have a slight auditory processing problem, or again maybe I’m just not an audio learner at all
siriuslylupin6 1 points 2y ago
Could just be not auditory not always good at processing auditory I have to say read that again or can you say the instructions. The worse is if you chant to me a series of instructions then say go repeat or a bunch of noises then I duplicate it’s like... uh..... nooooo.... what? I’ve forgotten already.
Criptedinyourcloset 1 points 2y ago
Twins annoying, but I see why people think it. Usually it just takes a bit of explaining an education. Now, if the person refuses to learn. That’s another problem and that’s not your problem that’s their’s.
siriuslylupin6 1 points 2y ago
Yeah, more annoying then anything else really I can see it but it’s a bad stereotype.
[deleted] 7 points 2y ago
Hey. Because of the fact that our visual impairments or blindness is seen as a disability, we are usually overlooked, or thought of as inferior.
annibear 6 points 2y ago
This might be a Hot Take but I feel like the assumption is that if you're blind, the government takes care of you and you don't work or have a good education. I profoundly hate that and wish that it weren't the prevailing view, especially amongst some "blindness professionals".
GreatAttractorPrey 4 points 2y ago
I am legally blind and just started receiving disability as much income because transportation to work while not being able to drive is hard, it’s most definitely not even a livable wage and people ask me if it’s nice having the government pay my bills. Like no I’m actually struggling and it hardly covers my bill little alone extra things like food.
Criptedinyourcloset 3 points 2y ago
I can relate to everything in this comment section. This one’s not an exception. This, is so annoying. And what’s even worse is that professionals even think this.

When people try to baby me or think I can’t do things for myself. Once I was going to the massage place with my friend you know, to get a massage. And this woman is asking questions like do you need a robe and stuff like that which is normal. Except, she keeps turning to my friend and asking her the questions like does she need a robe? I kept on replaying yes I do and stuff like that and she just kept asking her the questions. Finally, I just said “lady, I am right here, I have a functioning brain, if you want to ask me a question, ask it to my face don’t ask it to my friend. “And then this lady proceeds to act all offended and says “well, I didn’t know. “And a bunch of other stuff. I’m not going back to that place.
AllSharkLivesMatter [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I experienced something like that before. I was at Walmart when I was going to buy a movie that happened to be rated R; FYI it was a Ted and Ted 2 double feature. The cashier looked at my mom who was with me at the time and asked her if I was over 18. I was and she could’ve asked me that question.
Alaisha 5 points 2y ago
I hate people assuming we feel faces, or assuming we don't, or shouldn't use words like watch and see. GRR.
GreatAttractorPrey 4 points 2y ago
For me it’s always when I tell people that I can’t drive because I’m legally blind and they respond with,” Honestly you’re kinda lucky I hate driving sometimes.” Like did you even for a second stop to think how much you rely on driving (especially living in a small town) just for your basic survival while trying to live alone?
Criptedinyourcloset 2 points 2y ago
I just face palm and walk away.
aangelis104 3 points 2y ago
Just because I where an eye patch doesn’t mean it’s ok to call me patchy and it doesn’t mean that all I am is that one partially blind guy. I’m much more than that as a person. Don’t introduce me as being partially blind I can do that myself.
bigmiracle 3 points 2y ago
Just started to use my cane publicly and the security at our kids school referred to me as the guy going blind to my wife when we met there recently for a parent teacher meeting. She was embarrassed and felt bad. Im not fazed by those comments. Sad commentary on society is that now with a cane i get more good mornings than ever in my life!!
RainAndTea77 1 points 2y ago
Some idiot once asked me if blind people can be racist and then compared me to daredevil.
