Synthesizer groups for blind musicians? (self.Blind)
submitted by Laser_Lens_4
TL;DR Looking for group of blind synth/electronic musicians.

Lately, I've been getting into music and synthesizers. I've been making good progress with my Reface and slowly learning to play. This is seriously fun, and I want to expand my arsenal to put together some simple tracks in the future. I'm looking for all sorts of stuff: synths, drum machines, sequencers, controllers, a mixer to record it all. I'm running into some hard walls though in the form of stuff with screens, LEDs, and buttons with multiple functions. It's really frustrating to be recommended really cool stuff that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, only to find out it's got a giant screen or some hundred-function button or what have you. Even an interface I bought had to go back because of an audio popping issue with NVDA I just could not fix. Then I'm wondering if it might be possible to use sound libraries as an alternative with Reaper since that's accessible (at least Reaper itself is).

Basically, I've got a load of questions, and I'm wondering if there's like a group for blind musicians who focus on synthesizers and other electronic instruments. I don't know which path I should take, but I do know that I want to keep playing, and I want to make some music, and I want synths.

Native Instruments Komplete makes its midi controllers and software accessible. There is a group on whatsapp, google groups and there's even dropbox folder. Check out kkaccess website.

I’m happy to help you i’m totally blind and have been making electronic music for many years :-) unfortunately to my knowledge there aren’t any dedicated blind electronic music groups. And the amount of blind people making electronic music is very small but growing. Sound libraries are good if you want to incorporate real instruments and precepts, but to be honest with you right now software isn’t where it’s at for electronic music ground up sound design. Right now with the current state of things if you want to design your own sounds from scratch hardware is a better investment. Just PM me bro :-)

I don't do synthesisers but I do spend quite a lot of time messing about with guitar processors and the situation is not that great. It's a matter of smothering it in bumpons and counting key presses.

Fractal Audio, you suck. Although you can theoretically remote control some of these things with software like pro tools, though that's barely an improvement.

I’m in a Discord server with my friend and her friends, who are all into music production. I’m just getting started with piano lessons though so I’m not at their level by any means. We’re in Australia, but if you’re interested I’ll let my friend know and see if I can send an invite your way

That sounds interesting. What kind of music do they do?
CosmicBunny97 2 points 2y ago
They mainly do EDM but I’m sure they wouldn’t mind other genres :) I’d be keen to make my own synth wave

Sounds awesome! I'd love to connect.

You might want to consider purchasing a MacBook. There’s a very good music program on there called logic pro 10. And I know for a fact it has a lot of different synthesizers and sounds. GarageBand also might work. But, I know nothing about since take this with a grain of salt.

You might be better off asking these same questions in /r/synthesizers. Though, I'm guessing that may have been where you're already getting your recommendations. I'm just scratching the surface on synths, but there are a lot that don't require any (or very limited) menu diving.

Hi, guys,

I have been blind since birth, and I'm wondering how I can go about learning the functions of a Sequential OB-6. I plan on purchasing one and I think it would be cool to master Rush's "Tom Sawyer." Also, I want to use the thing in my own music composition. So if there is anyone with any ideas on how to go about learning the setup, programming, etc. as a blind man, please drop me a line. Many thanks.

Posting a new thread or asking in /r/synthesizers might be your best bet. This thread is over 1 month old and unlikely to get any answers
