Can a blind person run? Is it possible to build special parks/running roads for visually impaired people? (self.Blind)

Tethers to a running guide and guide rails have been mentioned but they are not as much fun as shouting directions to someone while they hold their white cane out in front of them like a cavalry lancer.

This is the correct answer.

Sure, blind people can run! They run into walls all of the time! LOL!!

Trust me, I know. I run into all kinds of stuff, even with my cane, haha.

Okay, just trying to interject a little humor into the topic.

Special parks for the blind sounds like an amazing, but very costly, idea. I don't think it would go over well though. Just think of the insurance nightmare it would be.

I'm sure it's ...possible ... but running with a partner is probably more convenient, even though that means you're dependent on another person to go for a run. Then again I guess that does keep you accountable ...

Yes, totally. They make tethers so you can run with someone. And there are also tracks that have like a special rope around them for holding onto when you run (If I'm not mistaken, I think they have one at Perkins, it has like a handle that slides along the rope so you're not burning your hand)

I googled a little bit and it looks like there is also a company called Blindtrack who makes like, fancy electronics for helping blind people run track safely.

Here is a link to a "running tether", it's just a piece of like, nylon rope sort of material with loops on both ends. $1

Yes! I know of someone who ran a 5K and won. I don’t know the details, but can find out if interested (it’s a friend of friend).

Yes, i couldn't keep up to a fully blind since birth young Teen who used white cane when we rushed to supermarket or school he was so damn fast and I'm legally blind 20/1000 vision in one eye left eye blind and with white cane too. There was actually a rule "no running!" For everyone: blind and visually impaired on this rehabilitation camp and school. Some we're running anyway :)

there are several categories of running in the Paralympics, both for the blind and other disabled people. It's quite popular in my country.

Yes. I just simply use my cane and run outside on uneven sidewalks too it works well actually so yes, no difference at all.

Wait what? I mean I've booked it to class on my college campus using this method, but actually running? Like, going for a 5k or something? Doesn't it impale you on the cracks lol? This is interesting though. I normally just run with a tether but I wish I could run freely.
siriuslylupin6 2 points 2y ago
Not if you are extremely careful but you have to be very aware and react quickly. Haven’t been impaled yet haha!
Unlikely-Database-27 1 points 2y ago
Do you use 2 point touch then rather than constant contact? Also is it always the same root? I'd imagine you'd have to know the way pretty well right?
siriuslylupin6 2 points 2y ago
Yes mostly two point touch really fast I would also say you always want to do that don’t cross any streets just pick a block you know you can’t focus on speed and mobility so I pick a middle school to do it at.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind trains guide dogs for blind runners. I have one, but due to COVID we haven’t had the opportunity to do the trainin yet. She’s 4 now, so it may be too late with her.

i run solo, but never sprint except on tracks, and stick to wide open paths I am familiar with. (RP 17° central vision remaining non-correctable 20/200 & 20/350)

Sure, last year I joined the sports club for visualy impaired and blind in my city and I train long-distance running. You need to find a guide, someone who'd like to train with you and a good running trainer that will correct your posture and technic. My trainer won a silver at paralympics and he always finds something to correct. As to running with the guide, we use these bands for keys that you put on your neck. I took two of them and joined them. The guide holds one end and I hold the second end and we run.

Most people have mentioned tethers, so someone with vision loss can run with someone who is blind. I've also seen a specially built running track for students with vision loss (it was for a school for the blind). It has a handrail that runs around the inside of the track, and someone runs while holding onto it.

However, there is a limit to how fast you can go (because when the straightaway ends and becomes the turn, there is very little reaction time), unless you are holding it tightly, which also slows you down. It also takes up a lot of real estate, with the middle part being harder to access (since the handrail has to be unbroken).
