Hello blind redditors! Please read if you have time! (self.Blind)
submitted by Carol_Danvers2020
So, I’m an aspiring author, and the main character of my books is totally blind (and wasn’t born that way- he loses his vision in the story). He’s also autistic. While I have done a lot of research on blindness, I want to ensure that I am portraying the disability accurately... so my question is, would anyone here be willing to talk to me about their experience with blindness? Please send me a message if you’re willing!

Note: I highly suspect that I am autistic, so I understand the need for accurate representation. And the last thing I want to do is represent blind people badly. I really want to get this right!!

Thanks for reading!

Sure get in touch. I am a super weird and almost extra capable and very out there and tactile and able blind person but if you’d like give me a go would love to talk to you and help where I could I’ve been doing it quite a long time.

Bonus I know quite. A few autistic blind folks.

It’s definitely a bit difficult to try to compare what going blind wold be like when the “person” in question is a magical, aura sensing, shapeshifting dragon lol

Hahaha! Very true.

I love writing stories too, and it sounds fascinating what you are trying to do there.

I am autistic myself and got some problems with my vision (my visual field is smaller than normal, and I have some problems with seeing contrasts etc.) But thankfully I am far from being blind right now and no one can tell me if it will get worse in the future. At the moment I just hope it stays like that forever. (But I think whatever happens to me, I am seeing a specialist in a few weeks, I will be able to lead a good and happy life. This community showed me that with whatever level of vision that will be possible. Thank you people.)

So I don't know if I can help you with the blindness part, but I would totally offer to answer any questions if that would help.

I'd be alright with sharing, however, I did not lose my vision later in life and therefore wouldn't be able to answer all that many questions about the coping aspects of it, as being blind has essentially been normality for me and I've accepted it as such apart from the occasional moment of dissonance during my childhood :)

I would like to ask a question back if I may, why does the character have to be blind?

There’s actually a pretty good reason! (You’re asking for the significance to the story, right? I think that’s what you’re asking.)

So the main villain has the power to mess with the occipital lobe in his enemies’ brains, the part that deals with vision, and makes it so that they temporarily can’t see. Since the main character Garan is blind, however, he is unaffected; his species (they’re dragons) is able to sense magical auras, and they also have good hearing, so with those two things combined, he’s still able to fight. (Important note: he cannot see the magical auras, he can just sense them.) Garan is a lot better at fighting the villain than most people because he is used to be being blind, so Garan is the one who eventually defeats him.

Hopefully that makes sense!

If you were asking how he goes blind, he loses his sight to an infection. His face was clawed while he was protecting his wife, and then his wounds and eyes got infected, which caused him to lose his vision entirely.

fair lol. he still struggles with his disability at first, though, because he can’t see inanimate objects. so he does use a white cane to navigate when he’s not, well, fighting
