wow. I'd never even considered this could be "improved" from a blindness perspective. Could we have some more detail?

Of course. So I am pressing myself to make a plate, bowl, and cup for this project. Basically my problem is that the things that are on the market look like they are for children which I feel like is just mean. Products like trays or bowls with very bright colored rims. I want to make a set that can improve your experience but at the same time not insult you. I am 75% sure I am going to use ceramics and make use of texture big time. The ceramic design must be slip cast-able because as an industrial designer I am trying to appeal to a wide audience not just a one off set. As of now I have sketched a ton of different form language or shapes that define how the tableware looks but I am playing with having things like a ridge at the top of the rim so that the user, much like they would use a cane to grasp where they are they can use their flatware to feel for that bump so they know they are at the rim of the bowl. Another concept I had was to separate the plate into different sections without looking like a middle school lunch tray and including different textures to separate those spots on the plate. Texture will really be my friend in this project and something I have been talking to my teacher about is just including whatever design language I have right into the form of the piece so that it really looks like it goes together. So to make a long story short I am really trying to find different ways to make your eating experience more enjoyable and elegant. Anything, I mean anything can help me at this point. I have hit one of those design walls because while I can close my eyes I don't live with it. I can't even fathom what my audiences day to day life is like.

I mean high contrast colours can be very helpful, my counters are white, I easily miss something white that's near the edge. If my floors were white too cleaning up the broken plate etc is hard...

There are already devices to know when a cup is full so you don't over pour, I like the idea of a tactile part so I wouldn't have to deal with the high squeak beeping, but I also don't want to stick my fingers in a mug if I'm making a hot drink...
Maybe think about thermochromic paint? If a white mug turned black when in contact with something hot, it could be useful for those of us who can see colours, and black and white is pretty much universally high contrast compared to red/blue say

Oooooo... I like the thermochromic paint. I’ll have to do some research and see if they make glaze like that. I agree that the bright colors can help but in my opinion it can be done more elegantly. Is there any products that you guys can think of that help you without any technology?

Personally how something looks isn't a big deal for me, I much more value function over form!

My iron guard is a life saver, and I really like my tactile measuring tape, it's not very accurate though. There's some shampoo and conditioner bottles that have different tactile bumps/lines on the bottles so you can tell which is which

most use the clock method (steak at 9, potatoes at 3 and sauce at 5 (something like that))

maybe that's a good starting point

Right this is what sparked my thought of having the plate in separate sections without being over extruded so that on the rim you could have say a bumpy texture on one side and a rough texture on the other. So instead of saying the pizza is at 3 o'clock you say the pizza is on the side with the bumpy texture. Again we are back to this grey area were I need help understanding if that would actually be helpful or just annoying and unnecessary

>So instead of saying the pizza is at 3 o'clock you say the pizza is on the side with the bumpy texture

but that's the same thing, and unless you touch the plate how do you now what side bumpy is? clock is easier, you could add something resembling the numbers around the edge of the plate rim so you can feel the orientation, it's simple and builds on what is already used.

could also double for a fun way for kids to learn the clock face with so many digital clocks out there

for the bowl what do you mean with rim to feel when you are at the top? feel with what; hand, spoon? and how far in process?

I'm not sure whether it would be necessary. Knowing what part of a plate your food is in based on the clockface method works very well unless you rotate the plate or move the food around.

What ideas did you have for a bowl and cup?
