Judo. I've been doing it for years (and now because of the virus I have not been doing it for a year, but anyway.) You can do it almost on the same level as anyone else, but I wouldn't say it was a complete solution to everything. I am still a five foot tall blind woman and my ability to actually seriously defend myself again anyone is going to be pretty minimal.

yeah judo seems to keep popping up so i’m gonna go with that. p.s you can always kick and run lol

Check dojo’s in your area, talk with instructors. Let them know your limitation. I’d checkout Jiu-jitsu, or Krav maga.

What about jujitsu or pepper spray or a knife or something?

Also having a really dominant and assertive attitude helps learn to get gruff and tough. most people know not to mess with me there’s been some blind fools lately but honestly most people know messing with me is probably messing with the wrong person. It’s how I present. It’s almost like hey I am siriuslylupin and I am assertive and you don’t dare mess with me, you hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve never been bullied before because of how I hold me.

And especially if I am tired like now you super don’t mess with me. So yeah. Or there will be consequences and major ones too.

I am polite but if you mess with me you better be ready for what will come your way and people don’t generally mess with me anyway.

yh i hear what you’re saying but what when there’s someone that matches your energy?

Show them who’s boss it’s more about attitude and posture sometimes it’s about survival of the fittest. I find that people who really truly want to mess with people really aren’t that strong or have that much confidence or whatever. They just put on a show why would someone who’s really that way want to do something like that?

Grappling of any kind. Learn where to grab. Learn how to grab.

This sounds like a PSA but the best way to defend yourself is to avoid fighting. If that doesn't work, don't start a fight but don't allow your attacker to finish the fight.

it’s not that i wanna start fights it’s when you’re being disrespected and i just wanna fight but i can’t cos of my vision it’s stressful or when an argument gets heated i have to back down cos of my vision which i hate cos i feel like a bitch after. with my size and build you’d expect me to not be a pushover but i am cos of my vision so learning how to fight will give me that confidence. and also wanna protect the girls i date if anything did decide to happen.

Fair enough. When I did time in my 20s (and in high school,) I was called upon to defend my honor too. I was just getting the bullshit out of the way.

When you're disabled, you have to play to your strengths. Our eyes ain't it. Take it from a guy with bad eyes, worse lungs, and chronic neverending pain. The easiest way to end a fight when you're absolutely sure it's going to happen is to step, grab, gig, and push back. The best areas I found were straight nose, straight chin, hook jaw joint (near the ears,) straight solar plexus (just under the ribs,) or hook to the kidney.

Is it dirty? Sure is. Do you want to lose due to a set of rules they ain't gonna follow? My own rule is if you disrespect me, you're no longer deserving of my respect and if you put on boots, I will knock your ass out of them.

If it's a sustained fight (don't ever get in those. Element of surprise is how you keep from getting jumped by the guy's friends,) instead of pushing away, push to the side or towards a wall and try to get an arm hold of some kind. Control his body, in other words.

Just remember though, assault is a real crime and you will do real time so, seriously, stay away from fights if at all possible. Jail fucking sucks.

The two most common defense paths for blind/low vision are judo and cane-do. Judo has specific (minimal) accommodations for blind athletes so they can compete equally with sighted competitors. Best of luck finding the path that works for you.

Cane fighting doesn't work with blind canes. They're too light and too fragile to be effective as anything more than a distraction to throw at your opponent. A blind cane is neither a traditional cane nor a bo staff (for us long cane users.)
