I'm a programmer, what can I do to help blind / visually impaired people? (self.Blind)
submitted by HRM404
Hello fellow redditors!
As the title says, I'm very eager in making something that helps visually impaired people live a better life. I want to hear your challenges and what you're really aspiring for in your lives. It doesn't matter if it's about any aspect - as family members, as students or workers, or any aspect that you want to talk about.. I want to hear your stories.
Thanks!

Search GitHub for open issues with the words "TalkBack" "VoiceOver" "JAWS" or "NVDA".

Those are screen readers and lots of apps and programs have compatibility issues with them.

Start making PRs to fix those and you'll be making a tangible impact on people's lives and, hopefully, contributing to FOSS, which is always nice. Along the way you'll learn a lot about the issue that affect the blind and low vision community.

This is great and practical advice that will have a real impact on software people are actually already using and need.

It's just not as glamorous as building your own app and running a startup.

It doesn't look as nice on your CV, when you leave college. It does, however, train you in working with large projects, which is very important.

Whatever you're working on, add a dark them to the front end. White screens cause me eye pain.

x100 this! When looking for apps the first thing I look for is if there is a dark mode or not.

Hello! If you know Python, maybe it could be very useful. I am a computer engineering student, and in view of the lack of accessible material to read science, I have developed a translator from LaTeX to txt files, to make reading simpler. PDFs with scientific content cannot be read well by screen readers, and LaTeX, the source code with which they are usually created, can be read using notepad or a simple text editor. The problem is that it is not so friendly to read that way, and that is why I made the translator, which simplifies many of these things. For example, if you type \frac{1}{2} using LaTeX, I translate it as 1/2, and so on with many other things. I also use unicode symbols. This has been very helpful for other blind students at my university, and I would like to be able to make it more stable so that more people can use it, but I still have to fix some things. If you want to help me or any developer reading this is interested, I'll leave right here the link to the github repository.

Thanks a lot!

find bookworm reader's github page and help them solve and develop it further.

The Github idea is a great one, but even if you don't go for that, simply following WCAG2.1 Level AA or higher guidelines when coding and spreading the "universal design" message to your fellow coders is a great step.

Not being able to access/interpret graphs or charts in real time is a huge pain. Be it researching price fluctuations on something you want to buy to try to get the best price, to any number of articles regarding finance or housing or whatever else you can imagine represented in a chart. I mean… Not every single thing has to become a home project where you have to bust out yarn and glue or use a super expensive embosser to relay that information in a tactile format. Sometimes, you just want to read the article or visit the webpage and move on with your life 10 seconds later. Being able to even convert those charts or graphs into an accessible table or something along those lines with even a browser extension would be a big-time improvement.

Try to conceptualize non visual linear policies for all program navigation, not just the audio (Refreshable Braille Displays)

H would like a easy program to work with command lines such as the cmd in windows putty or powershell. The imput and output should be browsable with arrow if at all possible.
