Making a browser extension to make recipe websites more accessible (self.Blind)
submitted by grashapa
Hi, I'm the creator of the $1 browser extension. Repibox automatically finds recipes and shows the instructions at the top of the page in a consistent format. However, I don't even know if the current version of Repibox works for people who are blind.

Would anyone be willing to work with me to improve Repibox to help people who are blind? I imagine the current state of the internet with super long paragraphs in random layouts that jump around with ads might be exhausting for anyone who is visually impaired.

I use add blocker and find recipe sites, at least the UK ones, to be fine. And the US blogs are good too.

What made you decide to make this addon? I’d be willing to work with you if you pm me with a link to the addon and a recipe link to test it with.

I made Repibox as a personal project to make it easier to look at more recipes. I'll send you a PM! Thanks for the comment.

No problem.

I use an adblocker so it takes care of 75% of the problem.

Can I PM you to learn more and get user feedback? I'd like to help make a 100% solution.

This is an issue that with a bit of tweaking, doesn't really exist. Also it depends on proficiency as well, because screen readers have quick navigation keys built-in, which make using the web fairly fast, if you know how to use those things.
If you don't though, someone might need something like this, or they could just use reader view I suppose. I only use reader view if there are way, way too many related links getting in the way of an article. the ad blocker does the trick of taking out the ads, and social media widgets.

It makes sense how being proficient with the navigation keys really help for most cases. In the current design, Repibox is more similar to a reader view specifically designed around recipes, but I see your point about how adblockers can help remove a lot of the noise on very cluttered websites.
