I'm new to this reddit thing. Please forgive my many errors.
Ok I'm 32 legally blind 20-220 in my good eye, 20-400+ in my bad one. I live in the US.
I got a crazy idea at the end of 2015 itch lead me to hiking/backpacking the entire 2190 mile long appalachian trail from GA to ME. It changes my life both for the better and the worse. Sense then I've taken a kayak from the headwaters of the Mississippi River to Louisiana.and racked up well over 10,000 miles hiking on long distance trails. The problem comes in the off time. To start this new life I gave up allot, a stable job an apartment etc. Now 6 years sense I started I find myself unemployable. Where I live when not out adventuring is way way out in the country way up north where winters get severe. There is no public transportation, no ubber etc.u can't afford to move, can't really afford to stay either.. it costs 50$ to get a ride to a grocery store...

Anyways in less then a month I'm leaving to go hiking for a couple months but have been thinking about sailing for years. Done allot of reading up on it, (I'm quietly confident I could sail a small boat) I have recently won the argument with the DNR over my right to own and use a boat.. (locals don't like me doing anything around here). This seems like more if a project then I could do by myself though.. I could buy a used boat but some repairs and transporting a boat would require better sight then I have access to.

I think my long term goal is to live on a sailboat, in large part for the ability to go where I please. (Seems to be a trend in my life) but know I need to learn on a small boat or I need to learn from other people hands on like... I've been posting for years on sites meant to bring crew and boats together but understandably no boat captain is going to take a "blind guy" with no experience over the other 70 people trying to get the same spot.

Guess I don't know where I am going with this...
Give me your input if you would

I need ideas.. I'm stuck..

There is a guy on Facebook named Craig Wood. He lives on a sailboat and cruises the Atlantic full time.
He is a disabled veteran and often posts that he is willing to take on guests, especially disabled people who need to learn that they can survive and thrive.

This sounds like a good match.

If you can’t find him on Facebook send me a message and I’ll get you in contact with him.

I've had no luck finding such a person. Db comes back with several of that same name.

He is currently not taking on others due to covid.

This link should take you to his Facebook

Boat stands for "break out another thousand" or so I'm repeatedly told. I'd have to do all the maintenance myself and avoid marinas to keep costs in hand but aught to average out about the same or a bit less then renting an apartment not counting getting it seaworthy to start with

I keep wondering about building a plastic boat out of high density polyethylene HDPE. Plastic is very easy to weld so I could basically do everything myself if I had the materials... It's a pipe dream though.. realistically I'll buy a 1000$ craigslist boat that's already in the water and licensed somewhere and wing it for as long as I can afford...then back to MN...

Hell maybe I'll find like-minded folk who want to do similar....

From completely independent and bassicly normal (at this point skill/experience may well out balance the low vision) when on a mountain 20 miles from the nearest road but as soon as I have to do any real world normal life stuff totally screwed... I'm in love with the idea of never needing another road ever again... Grocery delivery to the nearest port.... Now just to find a way lol
