I'm visually impaired by a house or condo(self.Blind)
submitted by WayneR82
I have a visual impairment I don't drive I depend on uber, lyft, or city buses for transportation anyway I'm trying to decide if I should get a house or a condo in the future. I do have one daughter currently co-parenting. I'm just trying to weigh in my options I'm not good at house maintenance so I know condos are good in that area anyway just need some advice.

Depends what you mean by "get" I suppose, and what your current situation is. In most parts of the world, it's much cheaper to own than rent, it's just a case of whether you can do it. I live with my partner who can see fine and honestly there are times when I rely on him to do things, but not so often that it feels like it would make living alone impossible. I think if I lived alone I'd try to have someone come in and clean and if something needed repainting I guess I'm not the most obvious person to do it, but that doesn't make life impossible. Maybe it makes life slightly more expensive, I guess.
Is that sort of the stuff you were thinking of?

No I can do all of that stuff as far as cleaning cooking and everything I'm not totally blind just have an impairment. However I don't drive so it's important to have stores nearby and have a city bus route. I know condos and apartments are accommodating when it comes to that. But the same time I don't want to be thinking about just myself I have a daughter as well so I want what's best for her too.

My wife (sighted) and I own a "condo. There are aspects of it which really do make life easier. Building and outdoor maintinence are taken care of; you're only responsible for your own unit. We pay condo fees, which are a bit steep, but we are paying for that convenience. Our power costs are also lower than if we owned our own house, and our other utilities are covered. So in some ways it balances out. But there's also the drama aspect of a condo. If you don't live around good people it can be difficult. And sometimes there are unexpected costs. We had a human rites suit filed against the strata company. a lady in a wheelchair can't easily come and go, and the building layout can't easily accomodate her. The strata company had to pay her $36000 in pain and suffering damages. And that money came from its residents. We had to pay $600 out of our own pocket ... around Christmas time.

Another thing to consider regardless of you blindness is whether this is an investment or your forever home. Depending on where you live, houses can provide better returns. You could buy a house in a neighborhood with a good school nearby and live there until your daughter graduates. In 20 years after you’ve paid a good chunk of your mortgage you can downgrade into something more comfortable. Just a general real estate thing to consider.

Often condos have HOA monthly fees for the maintenance of the grounds and common spaces. I have seen this from $50/month up to over $500/month. You won't have that with a house but will need to hire someone to cut the lawn and shovel the snow off the sidewalks.
Inside maintenance is the same.
The noise might be an issue. Do you mind hearing neighbors on the other side of the wall or dogs barking? If so, condo might not be a good choice.

I don't mind about the dogs or the neighbors especially if it's a quiet condo. I do have a daughter so having a backyard will be beneficial especially when she gets older but then I know some condos have pools. I don't know I'm so indecisive what to do it was best for accommodation standpoint. So

I suppose a condo has cleaners for shared areas like corridors and outdoor maintenance for paths, grass cutting. However you can buy a house with no garden or a low maintenance garden. Would a condo also fix a problem inside your apartment like plumbing or electrical? (We dont have condos where I live)
