Thoughts on Stereotypes (self.Blind)
submitted by _Night_Wing
I find it intriguing that the "blind people can't use computers or technology" misconception to be so prevalent even though that is the main way we interact with the world. Most blind or visually impaired people use one form of tech or another so how did that stereotype come about?

Bonus question: Are there any other giant misconceptions or stereotypes about the blind community that when you hear about it you are just... confused?

I hate the stereotype that blindness means no sight at all just utter blackness. I will admit when I was told I was going blind that was the first thing I thought of.

I also hate that when a job finds out then they find a reason to get rid of you or make it an uncomfortable work environment. Someone else can do the same error and they are called clumsy or its overlooked. But if I do it then its my vision keeping me from doing my job. But if you tell them at the beginning you are legally blind then they find a reason to not hire you.

The whole "blind is blackness" thing is so damaging because those of us with some remaining vision are accused of being fake and that can be scary. I once had someone swing at me so I ducked and I was met with "SEE YOU AREN'T BLIND". That's why I'm careful to say that I'm legally blind so I get left alone more.

Oh and I SWEAR the "you just aren't the right... fit for this job" that phrase can die. We all know what you actually mean. Also, since when did it become okay for able bodied people to tell us what we can and can't do?

Omg yes! This entirely!!! Sad thing i have have even dealt with this shit from doctors, when I go in for a new doc that isn't vision related. Its like I'm sorry I'm not in all black with sunglasses and a white cane. I am legally blind but still have some sight. I also have started using legally blind because it seems to make a difference then simply blind.

I haven't had a doctor not believe me yet. I think my medical history is so absurd that its past the point of questioning at this point.
I'm light sensitive so I'm the one perpetuating the blind person with sunglasses stereotype. I haven't heard of the all black outfit stereotype before though. I was a techie in high school drama so I guess I played into that one too.

Lol yeah I am light sensitive too, but can not stand sunglasses. Not sure why. Mine was in the beginning when I was rapidly losing my vision, the doc was a douche and was warned about his bad bedside manner. But after the retina photo and mri he couldn't really say anything about what he "could see". Especially as he didn't dilate my eyes when the others did. But I have learned some docs just have an ego and think they know everything. Lol I did drama too

The one that drives me nuts is the one where every blind person sings or plays an instrament. I can do neither. I am always amazed when somebody asks me if I sing.

When I left a fairly normal job to become a bass guitarist, I felt like I was pandering to popular prejudice because of all this stuff.

Oh the guilt it wracks me.

I'm the person with sunglasses glued to my face I get what you mean.

Funny enough almost all my blind friends have a degree of musical talent. Somebody even has perfect pitch. When we get together a concert is inevitable. Obviously it varies and its not the case for everybody but perhaps there is a correlation because we focus so much on audio so more of us are drawn to music.
BenandGracie 2 points 2y ago
I like listening to music, but I am really not a good singer. I wonder if it might have something to do with the fact that all my close friends are sighted. When we hang out, we usually talk guns, women, or fishing.
_Night_Wing [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I have a decent mix of sighted vs blind friends and at least in my experience my blind friends are much more musically talented than my sighted friends. Just an observation.

Because operating systems are very graprical and not just text as some screen reader users might think. Screens are also not laid out linearly like choosing an item from a menu.

To change society we need greater representation. It's a catch 22 that starts as children so it will tske generations.
In grade 10 I said I wanted to be an Electrician. The teacher said 'You can't do that" She wasn't evaluating me when she said it. Her mind searched for an example of someone with poor vision in that role and not finding one asumed they don't exist. She had no experiance to know what the job required or that most have vision issues as they age and find ways to cope. She became a teacher because she saw women represented in the teaching profession.

Its so hard being the first. Nobody thinks you can do it since nobody has done it before you. I was the first generation to go to school after the ADA was passed so I was the pioneering blind student teaching everybody how blind accommodations worked. I once almost got kicked out of a class because a teacher didn't think I could do it. I refused to leave the room and finished top of the class by the end of the term.

First off, I’ll start with one of my favorite quotes from the Onion. It’s a satirical site if you’re not familiar with it.

“Stereotypes. They’re a real timesaver.”

I think blind people have been portrayed on TV and in media as either shells of their former selves or as the subjects of comedy. We’re not portrayed as people who do “normal” things. I mean, it’s not entirely untrue because there is a higher degree of difficulty to get proficient with technology, but we can certainly get there and perform well. I’ll admit that I was one of these ignorant people but now I see, no pun intended, how blind people can adapt.

The onion is great.
I find the tech stereotype so interesting because I'm a younger person who is visually impaired and every single one of my blind friends are proficient at tech. You have to be to get anywhere these days. Maybe it was more true for older generations (especially pre ADA) but its certainly not the case anymore.

I would guess it comes from a mixture of things. The idea that blind people are stupid, the idea that you can't use a computer if you can't see the screen, possibly even the fact that so many sites are made inaccessible, causing us to have to stay on very specific sets of sites at times.
