My seeing eye dog was almost attacked by a fake service dog (youtu.be)

I serve on the disabilities committee at a small college. I can’t tell you how many ESA dogs we have had to approve because we don’t think that the law allows us not to. I love dogs and am in total awe of service dogs. ESAs are a whole different thing. I know you already know the problems so I won’t go off on a rant. This is a law that seriously needs to be changed. How do we organize to make that happen?

This is complicated for me. I have autism and OCD, and am able to greatly regulate my obsessions through care of my bird. I have her certified through my psychiatrist, as I am very ill. It would cause me a great amount of distress and interfere in my treatment to be forced to part with her. Most landlords, if allowed, would probably attempt this. Considering my mental illness is so severe that it disables me in this way, shouldn't the answer be to change accomodations in a way that helps more disabled people, rather than organize to remove current accomodations that abled people take advantage of? I'm a wheelchair user as well, but I don't think we should remove handicapped seats on the bus because abled people take them first. Hope this makes sense.

How do you regulate your obsessions through the bird? Did you train it? Is the bird a part of a treatment plan? It sounds as though it is and that is a whole different story. Yes, I agree that we would need to look carefully at wording the law so that people like you do not lose out. I said “changed” for a reason. Right now, the law is grossly abused, in my opinion. I’m happy to hear that you have received some comfort from your animal and I would never want to take that away.

Sorry man. My first seeing eye dog was attacked and couldn't work after that. We tried for a year to get him back to being able to, but it was unsuccessful. Sadly he only worked for 1.5 years before the attack.

I don't pretend to know what it is like to be bind, but I imagine it was very scary to hear your dog being attacked. Once my dog was attacked at the park, and I was terrified. I'm sorry that your dog was a attacked, but this also makes me sad because I love pitbulls, and I feel bad that one was abused to the point of attacking another dog. My sister has a service dog, (She is almost completely paralyzed from the waste down) and the amount of hardship and money spent to get him trained just lied about by someone pretending is very upsetting, especially when that dog has been mistreated.

A pitbull you say? Why is this so unsurprising..

I'm sorry this happened to y'all

Sorry to hear this happened to you. For future reference, when you ask 'what service does it provide?' what authority/grounds can you claim this authority?
Nighthawk321 [OP] 11 points 2y ago
I'm not claiming any authority. Asking what service the animal provides is one of the only questions you may ask a true service dog owner. So it was very much in my right to ask him that specific question.

The Americans with disabilities act (ADA) gives the legal right to ask.
