Universal Studios (self.Blind)
submitted by Xena66
Has anyone with absolutely no vision gone to Harry Potter world in Universal Studios and enjoyed it? My partner lost his eyesight completely last year and recent visits with specialists have indicated he likely won’t be getting any sight back. He was really excited to go to Harry Potter world prior to this and I would like to show him that he can still enjoy things like that if possible

Yes, I've been to both Universal Studios in Hollywood and Orlando since losing my vision back in 2014. While I was initially upset that I couldn't physically see all the detail that they put into the parks, the overall experience was still amazing. The butterbeer is crazy sweet and tasty, the food and ambiance at the Leaky Cauldron and 3 Broomsticks was great, and all the cast members are bought into the world so it's fun to interact with them when you encounter them. The music is always playing which helps with the overall immersion. I didn't get a wand since they are really expensive, but could be worth it for a souvenir.

We rode Escape from Gringott's several times in Orlando; such a brilliant ride! The staff were very helpful in assisting me when boarding the Forbidden Journey rides at both parks. Ultimately, I highly recommend going. All the rides around the rest of the parks are great, the tram ride in Hollywood is always a hoot, and I hope you both have a great time! Let me know if you want any specifics about anything at either park.

Thank you, I read this out loud to him and he’s much more excited about it! Do you know if Universal has audio description for any of the rides? I’ve heard that Disney does but haven’t seen anything about universal having it

i never asked about audio description for the rides, but also never saw anything about that being an offering at the parks. My wife is sighted, so she described the action to me after the ride or as she could doring them. There are some great YouTube channels that I love where they go into crazy fine detail about the ride history, an actual description of everything that happens in the ride, and how the ride works which gave me exactly the detail I was looking for after the rides. Here is the $1 channel link to Escape from Gringott's if interested, and he has descriptions of tons of other rides from the Wizarding World and others.

Sadly not, the rides do not have audio description. But the soundtrack is so immersive a little description from you would be more than enough to fully enjoy.

I've been to the Universal park in Los Angeles, whereas from googling around I find the main Harry Potter thing is in Florida, so this is maybe not directly what you were asking about. Like a lot of things there's stuff you can only appreciate if you can see, like the things that are mainly just a film you watch, and stuff that's fun anyway. I found loads of it was good fun, we went on the Jurassic Park ride and got soaked, we went to the Waterworld show and got soaked, then we stood downwind of some fountains and got soaked. It was okay though because it was southern California in august, and you get soaked in your own sweat if you so much as go for a run.

In the end most of the time you spend at these places is not on the rides, it's hanging out with your buddies and I have never had any massive problem with sitting through a ten minute experience I'm totally confused by then spending the next forty five minutes in animated discussion about it with my friends. Would I rather be able to see it, yes I would. I had good sight for most of the first twenty years of my life and I am always very aware what I am missing. But would I rather sit in the hotel and not go with? Hell no.

We had season passes and went a few times before the pandemic hit. It was also before I lost my vision so I’ve thought about what it would be like to return as a blind person. Note that I still have some sight so your mileage may vary. There are definitely a lot of little details to miss out on. For example, it’s fun trying to spot the owls hanging out about town and in the shops. They did a really great job recreating the buildings inside and out. Also, not being able to see the results of your wand casting skills would be a bummer. But here are a couple things that I’ve thought about.

- Even if you can’t see the results, you can still go through the motions of casting spells. It’s not always easy and you may have to try several times to get it right. You have to buy one of their special wands to interact with these spots throughout the park.

- There are 2 wand rooms. The first is the store where the wands are sold. It’d be interesting to feel the different wands and match them to the owner. The other is an event where a cast member guides you through the wand matching process. They only choose one person if I remember correctly but I think it’d be a cool thing to listen in on. Maybe even talk to them ahead of time to see if they’ll choose you.

- Butterbeer! Make sure to use that sense of taste.

- Speaking of taste, the Three Broomsticks restaurant actually has good food which is reasonably priced for a theme park. The construction of the building is well-done so be sure to describe the walkways and rafters above.

- The main Harry Potter ride could be split into 2 parts. First, once you’re inside the castle there are rooms and hallways with special scenes and sounds to listen to. Not being able to see the magical portraits is a shame so you’ll have to do your best to describe it. The actual ride has you following Harry and his friends so there’s dialogue to hear, but yeah, it’s pretty visual. Another thing is that the seats are pretty enclosed so you can’t really talk to each other. I guess you’ll have to ride multiple times to describe what happens ahead of time.

- Some people like to dress up in their Hogwart’s gear. Maybe it’d be fun to get into character.

These might be things a blind person could expect. In the end, hanging out and talking about the place as you explore is probably the best part. I hope he has fun.

Thank you! I know disney has audio description for a lot of their rides, I was wondering if universal might have the same because I remember the rides being pretty visual (I’ve been previously though he hasn’t).
