Writing a book with a blind as a main character.(self.Blind)
submitted by Kanann34
As I said in the title. To be frank I've never had a blind friend or talked with a person that has some sort of problem with seeing, yet I'm very interested in this subject and thus I have some sort of a need to write a story with said disability.
I plan on writing a chearful and wholesome story about a girl who was born blind and later in her life she persuaded her parents to let her go to normal highschool through accomplishments in music. Her parents agreed because she was praised by her teachers and her older sister works there as a school nurse. Then a boy is assigned to her side to guide her through a school buildings.
The story will be narrated by the said boy as he accompanies her in a daily school life and afterschool activities.
I want to ask you guys what would you like to see in a fimiliar setting? What struggles you don't mind sharing and may be connected to highschool life or life in general?
Love to you all.

>thus I have some sort of a need to write a story with said disability
"A need"? I'm sorry but you don't, instead you could just research and learn and maybe support your local disability center or something like it. that would be more helpful than inspiration porn.
on post like these I usually ask why it's so important the character is blind when the author knows little to nothing about it, why not just write what you know?
we're simultaneously fighting for normality but also for an understanding of disabilities and are seen as both an issue and an inspiration at the same time and it's fucking tiring, so yes some of us gets jaded

Well, maybe I said it wrong. It's not like I will publish it or anything. I write because I want to satisfy my own hunger for knowledge I simply do something when I have free time. I want to know more, that's why I asked here, but that doesn't mean I have to write something for myself that is incorrect.

and why is your satisfaction our concern?
Kanann34 [OP]0 points2y ago
I'm not doing it only because I want to feel good about finishing a book but to know about people with this kind of disability. As I said "satisfy my own hunger for knowledge." I'm basically asking you to teach me about you. Am i in the wrong?

that''s not our job and you have the entire internet at your fingertips, it's better to research as much you can first and then asking follow up questions if fine and we're all happy to answer those questions, even me, but at least meet us half way! and if you're looking for general knowledge why set it up like a book?

Fascinating.
Let me tell you a story.
I worked in a program that gave blind youth a first job experience. One of the staff members was a college student from a local University. She was under the impression people with disabilities tended to be more wholesome, or different in a better way, so to speak. But as soon as she learned that a lot of the blind students were just as normal, socially speaking, as she was, she quickly joined her preferred clique. She was rather young, about 19, so connecting with high school juniors wasn't too much of a stretch, and pot helped too.
Normally I don't respond to these types of posts, but your post seems to have a very... fascinating understanding of disability.

So from my post you understood that I think about people with this kind of disability as more wholesome. As if I'm patronizng them? If not then sorry, I'm a bit under the weather so maybe I misunderstood something.

Not the OP but yeah. It sounds like you are writing inspiration porn which is a thing that already happens to people with disabilities a lot. Have you read any books written by blind people about their experiences?
Kanann34 [OP]-2 points2y ago
I have not read. And I don't think I plan to do something that shallow. I just wrote a quick idea of what the beginning may entail but not everything.

The problem with this kind of story based off the initial idea you posted here is it sounds like the usual inspiration porn disabled people hate where we have to accommodate to environments suited to people without disabilities and are commended for that rather than being provided the aids and environment we need. The problem with this is it becomes very popular with people who aren't disabled and leads to misconceptions that if disabled people need more help and accommodations, they just aren't trying hard enough.
I'd be all on board for a sighted friend of the blind girl trying to help her get accommodations put in place in this school because maybe they're the only school she can get to with a program she is passionate about pursuing. Could start with her being a bit down this is the only school that could take her so whatever they give her has to be good enough but with the friends help and self discovery she learns she deserves to have her needs met while pursuing what she loves.

Hey OP, don't take it personally.
A lot of people are just jaded by now. Also, you said in your post that you never had a blind friend or anything like that, so it's not really your fault either.
that's why I think communities like ours should take an educational stance when we can.

I was born completely blind and say write what you like. I like the idea of your story.
I’d read it :)

So, this disscusion went in completely different direction than I thought (and it's great). That's why I should say more about the boy. I was thinking more about story of mutual help from one another. The boy had some trauma with his parents and suffers from monophopia, a fear of being alone. A blind girl and her scared guide. Something like that.

You really need to listen to the comments and do some research. Plus, could you use some people first language? There are more to people than their disability.
Person who is blind or visually impaired.
Do you know the legal definition of blindness? Look it up. Most people with a vision loss are not living in complete darkness.
It would be highly unlikely that your character would need to rely on someone to guide her around in a high school setting.
Your approach to this project is strange. "I have this idea so you teach me." What? That's not how writing works! Do something resembling some sort of research first!!
Edit for spelling mistake.

Why does she even need a guide? She's blind, not dependent on everyone around her. This perpetuates the stereo type that blind people are helpless and an extremely skewed perception of how blind people navigate.
