Anyone have a good suggestion? (self.Blind)
submitted by AutisticPearl
Hi, does anyone have a good suggestion on where to get a cheap and when I say cheap I mean under $900 preferably between 1 to $300 Perkins brailler about 60 but the reason I'm asking around is I want to have other options out there because the more options I have, the more informed I feel I will be. I'm going to put a backstory since I'm legally blind technically, and I can't really use my left eye but I have Vision in my right I've decided to take Grill classes at first I was taking them at work because I work at a place for the Blind and Visually Impaired and for both privacy reasons for myself as well as I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name my job due to their privacy issues I am just going to call it I can't see if been if you'd actually know what it is then good for you. So they were teaching Braille to the adults that were interested I signed up because I want to learn Braille because I decided that if my right eye every went bad I wanted to be able to use braille to read because I have a digital talking book player but I still miss or would miss that is having a book in my hand technically read print but for my own benefit and because I want to be able to learn better as well as I want to be able to have other heating options that may be easier for me depending on the book like example, if I'm trying to read a book like one piece I'd rather speak to me. But that's besides the point. How to take a break and then come would happen then we had to stop I took a long break because I had to stop and I didn't think it would take this long to get back to brew I thought it would take about a month then they figure out a way to spread his house and get back to it then it turned into that's what I would one more months to see if it going anyway then it didn't end up going anywhere so then I said okay and I didn't quit but I stopped for a while because other things came up well then I found out about the other things took care of them and now I'm taking Hadley well they have an option to learn how to write so I decided to break bread with a bring one because if I'm going to learn it I don't want you to just because my original Braille teacher told me that is a newcomer it'd be harder to use slate and stylus I'd only bought it because it was cheaper than a trailer because I can't pay $900 for a brailler a couple of Reason number one it take too long to say for number two I'm not allowed to spend $92 and something I don't need every day of them in my everyday life so that's what leads me to this can someone help me find a cheap option it doesn't directly have to be Perkins but I would like one that works like a Perkins brailler because I was learning on that A and B I want a tactile thing I can use this nut like riding on a piece of paper because I'm used to that and I've already Gorbachev that to begin with and I really want to be able to learn to write Braille.

Woah, woah, woah, take a deep breath..... A lot of that was one LONG sentence that got confusing. You are asking where to buy a Perkins. I truly have no idea about buying one. but have you gotten in touch with your local division for the blind? Or the National Federation of the Blind? They will know WHERE to get one. They may be able to get one free for you! My local Division of the Blind gave me a CCTV monitor/camera system, to enlarge print, for free, and these things can easily cost $1,500 and up. I would ask you local agency for the blind to help you. Perkins Braille Writers are not something usually listed on, say, ebay, or Craigslist.... so a local or state agency is a great place to start.

Have you learned how to read Braille? Have you learned beyond that and used a slate and stylus? So you know that when you do use one, everything you 'write' is backwards? Braille is not easy for those of us who didn't learn it when we were kids. Beyond that, have you actually used a Perkins? Because using one is nothing like using a slate and stylus. The Perkins is a LOT faster, BUT it is much more difficult to learn. It's basically a typewriter that types in Braille. I used to know a LOT of blind people, but only a handful knew how to use a Perkins. It does not have many keys on it like a regular typewriter, so the learning curve is really steep.

Thank you for the suggestion, and to answer your question I'm learning Braille now, I was taking it at my job because they offered it seeing as the higher blind and visually impaired people specifically. And, do the Cobra that had to stop so I started taking the Headley courses now. I do have Vision in my right eye which is actually why I wasn't aware of the idea of asking my local blind Services about where to get a good Perkins but I did find one for about $60 on eBay today so I may go with that part of the reason I was asking is because I'm trying to find one inexpensively because I want to be able to use it at my discretion and not have to habit for a short. Of time and then return the thing back borrowing it from someone or through some service but I may look into that, but only if that's my last resort seeing as I don't technically need it as I'm able to read print however I'm learning Braille because I want to benefit myself in case I lose vision in my good eye. Also, I am sorry for the long long run on sentences that it looks like, I use speech-to-text because of my visual impairment combined with other disabilities I have.

I’m able to read print as well and was given one through blind services in my area. I’m visually impaired, legally blind, but not fully blind.

Thank you, that was helpful I may actually contact them to find out.

It would be great to own one, right? Definitely. But you will need someone to teach you how to use it. It's nothing like writing Braille with a slate and stylus.
I see the one on ebay for $49, plus the $19 to ship. That is really cheap to ship this thing, as they are heavy! SOmeone placed a bid already. Was it you? I hope you can win the listing!!!

I think I'm going to get it but it sounds like my mom probably won't let me and it's not something I need so later on once I get further along in my Braille studies I'll look.

Sadly know that Ben wasn't me, because I haven't asked other people involved yet I'm a hoe. I can purchase back one because I know how to use it somewhat, and if need be I can look it up on YouTube and have a refresher course.

I think your first sentence doesn’t have to do with this post.
