Braille Lite 40 Help (self.Blind)
submitted by claustrophobic_betta
I finally got a note taker i can afford. was so excited. unfortunately it is a Blazie Engineering Braille Lite 40 from the dawn of time and didn’t come with a charger.

it would work if i could charge it but i’m stuck without a cord

Anyone know what kind of charger it uses, or have a sticker with amperage and voltage on it? apparently things are meant to have a sticker like that on the charging “port”?

thanks

Even if you could get a charger (which I think would be unlikely—your best bet in my opinion is to post an ad on Blind Bargains), do you know that the notetaker works? Like you say, it's from decades ago. If a charger is expensive, do the few months of use you'll get from it (because I doubt you'll get more than that) justify the cost of the charger? You certainly won't be able to pay for it to be maintained if it breaks, but it sounds like you don't have the money to pay for maintenance anyway.

These devices use commonly-available 6, 9, and 12VDC wall-warts terminated in a 3.5mm plug--also quite common. The required voltage should be indicated on the device near the charge port. I'm very interested in maintaining and repairing Blazie Engineering devices, even though Blazie/Freedom abandoned them in the early 2000's. Drop me a line if it doesn't work.

I have a braille lite here at the moment that doesn't function. What is the internal cell battery for? currently the power battery is good but the on board cell battery is very low volts. do you have wiring diagram etc?

The onboard battery is not difficult to replace if "not difficult" means desoldering the old component and refitting the battery holder with a 2025 (?) cell. The onboard battery powers the storage of settings. The device should power up, however, even if the battery is depleted. I will post a photo or two here.
