Any tips you think would work for pets? (self.Blind)
submitted by making_mischief
My girlfriend and I just adopted two cats - one has no eyes, and the other is about 80% blind. We know the basic stuff like talking when approaching, being slow with hand movements, crinkling things and tapping so they can echolocate, and not moving objects around on the floor so as not to confuse them.

Is there anything else y'all have found useful that we could apply to the cats?

Don’t have stairs, do not put bells on their collars, to play with them get a squeaky toy and see if they will jump for it. If they respond to that toy then you can invest in remote controlled sound-enabled cat toys. Still give them space, just because they’re blind they may not like to cuddle all the time, never move their food/water bowls, and if you want to give them a treat say it before you startle them.

I don't know. Blind cats can learn stairs. Thor from Tiny Kittens is a blind cat, and he did well, could even climb cat trees. Just depends on the cat really. I would certainly take time to teach the cat how to navigate stairs, but it's certainly possible.

Our Ivor (no eyes) took two days at his foster's to learn the cat tree and climb up it. There's a ramp to help him get down, and he just climbs off the top backwards.

Hahaha sounds cute. Yah I'm totally blind. I've often thought about getting a blind cat, thinking we might do well together, but who knows. Anyway, I already have two cats of my own lolol.

I think you officially become a crazy cat lady with five or more cats, so you're good to add to the menagerie.

Ah, the stairs we can't do anything about, but we will be putting wood or something else in the railing spindles so they can't fall out.

I'm curious about the bells on the collar, though. The nearly-blind one has bells on her collar so the eyeless one can hear where she is.

Good tips on the squeaky toys - I'd ordered a bag full of noisy things from Amazon and they seem to love it so far. They make a variety of sounds and we've been shaking/wiggling them so they can hear the sounds from a distance.

And thanks for the rest. We're trying to give them several hours each day alone so they can relax and map out the floor on their own schedules, and without distractions or anything anxiety-producing from us.

We'll be going to our trailer in the summer, which means mapping out a new area. Do you have any advice on how to make that transition as easy as possible? Like, are anxiety-reducing things (sprays, pills, etc) a thing for people, or just animals? We'll be putting familiar blankets in the cat carrier on the way up so they can smell that, and trying to bring as much from home as possible so they have some familiarity there.

Tiny Kittens has a Youtube channel where you can look up vids about Thor. He's since been adopted, but luckily the vids are still there. I know there is also another Youtuber with a blind cat. Also, I had a cat that was visually impaired. Sometimes she would climb onto books or something and get really high, and then it would all collapse. SO make sure whatever is climbed on is something stable and just take the time to teach them. If they are afraid to climb stairs or something, you can put a treat on each stair so that they will walk up or down getting treats and will also gain confidence.

We ordered two buckets of Temptations and have been giving it to them for just about everything (for now), and that's a good idea to have them on the stairs.

The eyeless cat is a little more timid than his sister, but we'll definitely have to watch that his sister doesn't try and climb anything that isn't rock solid.

Yah, though luckily in the case of my cat at the time, she was unharmed, and always tried again lolol. I didn't have a cat tree back then. I hadn't even heard of them at that time. Also try and make sure whatever that's climbed isn't too cluttered with things that could take a blind cat by surprise or that would be knocked over and could startle her. I wonder if your cats would also enjoy audio things like bird sounds and music and things like that?
