I have a learning disability that impacts my brains' ability to process visual information, does this make me visually impaired? (self.Blind)
submitted by Santi159
I have been wondering if I could be considered visually impaired because of how my learning disability affects my vision. I can see fine eye wise but everything goes through slower and kind of out of sync? I run into things often and at times have a difficult time getting around. It can be disorienting and give me migraines. I am not sure if this could be called a visual impairment or not?

Hey friend. Cortical visual impairments are totally a thing and sounds similar to some stuff you are experiencing. And it’s considered “valid” so I think you are too

Hello! I had never heard Cortical visual impairments before but now that I read about it, it does seem very similar. I think I will bring it up with my GP to see if I can get evaluated. Thank you, I really apricate your response friend

I am new to this community so don't quote me.

but, "affects my vision." Ended your first sentence.

wither the impairment is the eye shape, cone ability, wires connecting, crossed wires, or anything else...

If it adversely affects how you interact with this world visually.. I would say yes. It has effected you enough to reach out and look for comfort, assistance, and community here.

May you find the comfort you seek.

Be safe. Know peace. Kick ass. Drink Water.

I want to make it clear that if it's solely a learning disability, like dyslexia or dysgraphia, it is not legally a visual impairment, but it might impact you in similar ways. But like others have said, there could be other factors
Santi159 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
That is true. We've been trying to figure out if I do have a different condition outside of an LD causing these issues and it's kind of inconclusive so far. It might be harder to get the accommodations I need if there isn't anything else going on.

I think I will look into a screen reader. I know video description made a big difference for me with movies and if I could get that with reading that would be really good for me.

I think a lot of people have different feelings about labels. I don't think there is anything wrong with the way I learn either but I don't really mind being called learning disabled. I'd rather get called that then unintelligent or lazy like I have been before. I do get what you are saying though, I normally don't actually say that I have an LD unless I'm in a medical or educational setting because of the stigma.

NVDA (non visual desktop access) is free, Mac has voiceover built in. If you're just wanting text to speech, I like Read Aloud Chrome add on. Edge has a read aloud feature built in. If you're in school, MS Word has Immersive Reader and Read Aloud standard.

In theory yes. Cvi, aquired brain injury etc. If you need help and assistance you should be entitled to it. I know for example in ireland the ncbi help anyone, yes mainly they help people with VI but will also someone struggling with natural age related vision loss, also the Visiting teacher service have criteria so a child with one eye or colour blindness wouldnt fall under the service but cvi would if the eyes were affected

With CVI, the eyes are healthy. And, yes, it is considered a visual impairment in most regions because of the brain's interpretation of visual images.

"Visual impairment" is a political term encoded in laws and statutes that attempts to identify medicalized social impairment. Whether it is categorized as a "visual impairment" may depend on the politics in your region. Can I ask whereabouts you live?

If you are asking, instead, whether your condition is a valid impairment worthy of inclusion into this subreddit or accommodation by friends, an employer, or society, I think it is fair to decide on your own, and nobody can fault you for claiming it. You probably face many of the same challenges users here face.
