Sunglasses recommendations for severe photophobia? (self.Blind)
submitted by ShoshanaLi

Hi everyone! Does anyone have recommendations for really, really dark sunglasses? I have albinism and am severely photophobic, so I do mean *really* dark. I prefer tinted green lenses because they cut down on the glare, but regular black/dark grey lenses are fine.

I don’t need to be able to see through the lenses—I can barely see outside anyway. I would prefer not to spend a fortune on new sunglasses, if possible! Bonus if the glasses are marginally cute (I’m a 19 year old girl and these things do matter to me), but function over fashion in the end.

Thank you!

If cute doesn't matter that much, get yourself a pair of welding-grade safety glasses. I'm not blind, but due to my autism, I have issues with bright lights and my boyfriend gave me his pair of glasses that he said he bought for not that much at Home Depot or Lowes. I don't remember which. They're super dark, green-tinted, and what's more, they wrap around my face and don't let so much light in from the top and sides like regular sunglasses do. They're the most amazing invention, and I wish I'd known about them earlier. I've had them for about a year, and they've changed my life! I only wish I could get my prescription glasses like this so I don't have to take the toss-up between slightly blurry when driving or squinting so hard I get a headache from the bright sun.

Wow, I’d never thought of that before, what a great idea!! Thank you so much!

You're welcome :) Hope you find something awesome.

you can get ones that fit over your Rx glasses (although you should ask your eye doctor if it's safe to drive with them!)

I have https://www.amazon.com/Pyramex-Prescription-Glasses-Safety-Welding/dp/B00YA25XI8 these from amazon, no idea if they're safe to drive with for obvious reasons.

https://noirmedical.com/ makes glasses (including clip ons, fitovers, and glasses with an Rx insert) in a ton of shades.

Thank you for sharing this link. The picture makes these look a lot lighter than mine, but who knows. I'll probably go for an eye exam later this year, as it's been close to three years, I believe, since got my eyes tested. I'm still ok to drive without my glasses, according to the doctor though, last time I went. But I will be bringing this up. My glasses are a tad dark sometimes for driving and distort the stoplights a bit, but that hasn't been a problem that I consider dangerous.

Noir medical makes great sunglasses for specific eye conditions. Just got my pair and love it.

Yes, I have a pair from them from the Commission for the Blind in my state. I love them!! They’re just a little bit of an odd shape for my head (maybe I have a big head? Haha) I should check out their other options!

Thank you!!

I do agree the frame options are a little limited; I had to do the best I could with what was available haha. I have frame #52 and can’t complain too much since they’re for functionality and not style.
ShoshanaLi [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Honestly, it’s not so much the look of the frames that bothers me as the fact that they gap a little and let some light in around the edges because they’re not quite the right shape for my head. As far as looks go, I am looking for relatively slim wraparound glasses; my only actually fashionable sunglasses are my indoor / nighttime ones, since I can wear regular sunglasses in those circumstances. I guess my standards for “cute” are a bit different from the norm!

I haven't had any gaps in the ones I have, if that helps. I also use a cheap "cute" pair for indoors/night!

Look up glacier glasses. They have protective shields to block light from around the lenses. You can get them really dark because they are made to be used in very bright places. They are also available in all different shapes and sizes so you can probably find something that meets your cute requirements as well. They also look like normal glasses and probably won’t attract possibly unwanted attention like welding goggles or something would.

I have cocoons. They fit over my normal glasses. I wear them when working (software engineer) and whenever I'm outside. Cute they are not, but they work.

I don’t need fitovers in particular (prescription glasses don’t do much for me), but I will definitely check them out!
Also, unrelated note, but if you ever have programming tips with low vision, please feel free to message me. I’m an undergrad studying astrophysics and do a lot of coding, so I’m always looking for pointers to make it go more smoothly!

Dark theme everything, turn down the brightness of your screen(s), sunglasses when a bright screen can't be avoided (someone sharing their screen, youtube video, etc).

Visual Studio code is a great all around IDE that has a ton of built in themes.

If you're using Chrome enable this setting (enter that in your URL bar):

chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark;

If magnification is an issue for you I'd suggest getting a mouse that allows you to map key macros to it so you can easily bring up whatever built in magnifier your OS has.

What language are you using? Python? R?
ShoshanaLi [OP] 1 points 2y ago
That’s really helpful, thank you!

I code in Python (pretty standard in astro nowadays) and use Jupyter notebooks. I actually used to be a screen reader & zoom user and had to switch to magnification only because because Jupyter is pretty unusable with screen readers. I’m still holding out hope that they’ll change that someday...

It looks like VS Code has an Jupyter integration.

I've messed around in VS Code with a screen reader before and it atleast acknowledged that I was using one, so I feel like VS code is worth a try (I primarily work in Visual Studio unless doing some front end work).

I am also severely photophobic as well. In sunlight all I can see is the color yellow. I use cocoon sunglasses.

$1

They have multiple frame colors and the colors of the lenses outside are customizable too. I have ones that fully enclose my eyes bc of the glare from above and below can give me headaches.

They also have slim frame designs that don't make you look like a cartoon blind person in huge dark sunglasses. Which I appreciate.

I also have a super cheap pair from Amazon that I don't even know the brand of, and honestly I painted the inside of the lenses on that pair black just so I had something to block out the light.

Ask your doctor where to get glasses for people who have just had pupil dilation. Another option is try out wrap-around glasses for boating. They might not be as dark but they are designed to cut down glare a ton. Make sure your glasses are UV resistant and also polarized. You can also decorate whatever glasses you end up getting. Take a trip to the craft store and go crazy.
