Finding a Lab to Make My Lenses (self.Blind)
submitted by WellSuper
Hello! I'm hoping someone may be able to offer some advice. I have a very strong astigmatism and unique prescription. My glasses are very thick and what I get back after seeing an optician can vary wildly. Sometimes the lenses are much thicker than others. Sometimes the measurements for where my eyes sit in the lens are wrong. It often takes several tries to get glasses that actually work. So, I'm trying to figure out if there is a glasses laboratory I can request or use to fill my prescription going forward. A place that specializes in unique glasses. I'm willing to pay extra to have it done well. Any suggestions would be immensely helpful. Thanks so much in advance!

This is all excellent! Thanks so much! I’m SoCal as well and in addition to UC Irvine, I may also check out Jules Stein Eye Center at UCLA, see if they do glasses. I’ll let you know what I find. Thank you!!

As others have said, try a local children's hospital. I've been going to my local Sears Optical all my life, but now that Sears is out of business, I guess I might go to UC Irvine since I'm in SoCal too.

Finding an optical shop associated with an eye clinic, either at a hospital or university, should suit your needs.

I tagged along with my visually-impaired family member on a trip to the UC Irvine eye clinic and got my own glasses done through their optical shop. It was the best experience I've had getting glasses! They had the lenses made elsewhere but then shipped to the location and fitting to the frames in about 30 minutes!

Based on your post history, it looks like you're in LA County. I got mine done at the UC Irvine Optical shop: $1

Do you live near a city with an eye hospital? Commonly they have a low vision center that is used to difficult prescriptions.
I did that for my reading glasses. We played around with the devices and things that I do on a regular basis. In the end the prescription that gave me the best clarity wasn't the ones that were the most versatile.
They know what they are doing and know the labs that can actually make the lenses and frames work for you.
