Let me guess. Some sort of vibrating wristband with a sensor on a hat or belt.

Maybe an electronic cane, that costs a fortune, heavy, breaks easily and can't be repaired because the startup goes out of business 2 weeks after you buy it?

Thank you for replying. The goal is for haptic feedback to be paired with distances sensors. So yes, that's pretty much the idea.

I don't want to change the white cane. I think it has a very specific purpose and accomplishes. The ideal solution I currently can think of allows for the user to better understand their surroundings in the least intrusive manner.

Much of the development process will focus on making a light, durable and affordable product. I hope to learn a lot from what the community desires and hopefully create something that could make a great impact as an engineer. This is not something I look to profit from. Currently looking into non profit funding from grants and research groups.

We get ideas like yours very often in the sub. Without wanting to be overly rude, it's a terrible idea that never works.

They can never come close to a cane.

They can't tell me the depth of a step, detect trip hazards like a raised paving stone, would be constantly buzzing in a classroom, hallway or on a busy sidewalk, etc

Also, a cane is a signal to other sighted people that the user is blind/vi

I am completely with you. I think the white cane is perfect the way it is.

I am working to develop a device to work alongside the white cane. A non intrusive device capable of allow the user to just understand their surrounding's even more.
