Update: What hobbies and activities do you do for fun? (self.Blind)
submitted by BaylisAscaris
Previous post:

I'm a sighted person but temporarily visually impaired due to a severe eye infection. I'm going a bit crazy from the pain and trying to distract myself from it but I'm having a difficult time doing my regular hobbies because they all either require good vision or I'm not skilled enough to do them without.

So far I've been listening to audiobooks and playing with pets. I might try crocheting. I would love to hear your suggestions for any activities a complete noob can do. I can see a little but everything is very blurry and it's painful to keep my eyes open.

Thank you!

Update:

My vision never recovered 100% from my eye infection but it is much better. I went to the eye doctor and mentioned I have a family history of glaucoma and macular degeneration and today tested positive for both but in the very early stages. Doctors are going to keep checking it and see if they should start any treatment at this point. Most people in my family get it as they get older and many have lost their vision to it.

For any sighted folks reading this, if you have a family history of vision problems or experience any changes in vision, see a doctor. Some things are very treatable if caught early. My eye infection was almost a blessing because it made me visit a doctor, plus I'm going to get glasses for the first time, which I'm weirdly excited about.

So. You should start practicing some non visual skills so that later you will have less issues. Especially for hobbies and such that you like to do. Also. If I recall correctly macular degeneration puts you in a category that will allow you to receive national library services for audio books.

That's great advice. I already listen to audiobooks pretty much constantly from the local library.

You may also want to see about getting a bookshare account and bard account. That way you have all the access. 😊

I spend most of my time at the gym. Exercise is a good way to keep busy.

Pick up a musical instrument too. Maybe learn woodworking. Wish I could, but no place for tools in this little apartment sigh.

I've done a little woodworking and a lot of other types of sculpture. Lately I've been really obsessed with fiber art and thankfully I can do most of it without looking.

I also have a background in game design and gaming is a big part of my life. I think if my vision starts getting worse I'll look into designing some accessible games. I really like the survival genre, so maybe something where you have to survive in darkness with only sounds and verbal descriptions of objects you can touch.

I would play that if you could get it working.

I'm not amazing at coding so don't expect anything soon but I'll talk to my friends who also do game design and see if anyone is interested.

Maybe post a thread here if you do come up with something.
