Beauty Product Design Project (self.Blind)
submitted by ninacol
Hi everyone! I am new to reddit so please bear with me :) I am a maker and an Integrated Design student.

I am really interested in the design of beauty products and how it mostly excludes those who are visually impaired. I want to design a more seamless experience. I would love to see a future where most products-not just beauty products are designed with tactile features if not braille.

I was originally inspired by a YouTuber named Molly Burke who rated beauty products by their accessibility features. Her channel is a great resource for me as I research the visually impaired or blind experience. I would love to talk to any of you about this process, and things that would actually help you. I cannot put myself in your shoes but if anyone would be so kind to lend me their time in this process it would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good day you guys,

Emilia

Hey internet friend, be careful giving out your info like that. We are safe here, but reddit houses some scary people.

Makeup is very inaccessible. I'm legally blind. Still use my sight for most of my life, and I really struggle, not just with application but also color and product identification etc.

Note taken! thank you so much.

I agree makeup is really unaccessible. I am thankful for your response. I am hoping to dream up a system that possibly helps with colour and product id. Would perhaps an eyeshadow palette with tactile shade names help?

It could help, The thing is that braille takes up a lot of space. And color names are often abstract outside of tertiary colors. But I think it makes are short enough or there is a key if sorts identifying which is which and what type of color they are, that would help. This can be a QR code or something in the packaging etc.

My wife is all about perfume bottles, she can identify brands and specific fragrances with just a finger on the glass most of the time. Boggles my mind.

wow that is amazing!!! Are there any specific features of a bottle that helps her identify the fragrance? thank you so much for your response.

Hi guys, I have an update on this project I would love to share!

I am working on a set of tactile stickers of different symbols, heights, and finishes which can be applied to makeup and beauty products. My goal is to create a more inclusive makeup experience. I first thought of a line of makeup products, but realized this only opens a small section of the market for blind and visually impaired users.

I would love to hear any feedback at all :) thank you in advance
