If sunglasses help, then use them. Period.
I had a series of surgeries on my left eye that left me looking pretty rough for a while. People were noticeably bothered (sometimes flat-out scared) by my appearance and it did a number on my self-confidence. It's easy to say "Just don't worry about what people think." It's also easy to say, "Cheer up," "Calm down," and "Have you tried *not* being blind?"
Do what you need to do to be comfortable with your appearance. If you eventually decide you prefer not to wear sunglasses, I hear they're easily removed. 😎
You've got nothing to lose but self doubt. Take care, buddy.
Edit: Lots of people wear sunglasses in the winter. And if someone hassles you for wearing them indoors, just show them why and watch them turn three shades of red.

Grab up some sun glasses. Not blind, but I do know what “opinions” I have when I pass blind people. It is normally some variation of, “well this guys out and about gettin stuff done”. Essentially the same thoughts I have when passing anybody else out and about that catches my attention in my general area. Don’t build it up in your head, friend.

Why pretend for others that will never contribute to your success? I always wear my sunglasses whenever I walk to the gym & I've never had an issue with meeting people. Your true friends will never care. Just wear the gym confidence proudly.

Sunglasses look good and prevent many ailments even if you are totally blind, everyone should wear them as often as possible.

I wear sunglasses all the time because I have photophobia (light sensitivity). Very rarely I’ve gotten asked why I wear them, but I’ve never gotten comments about my appearance. Just remember to occasionally sing “I wear my sunglasses at night” to yourself in the evening— it makes life more fun! 😎

Personally I never wore sunglasses except for protecting against sunlight before going totally blind, because I genuinely don't care about what others think or feel about it, but also because wearing them makes me feel like I'm trying to hide a disability.
