Looking for Text to Speech for reading journal articles and PDF files(self.Blind)
submitted by BubblyBullinidae
I'm a sighted nursing student who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. Part of my struggles is being able to focus enough to read long-winded journal articles, textbook chapters, and other pdf files. I find that if I can listen to the content while doing other tasks, it helps me to get through the content and able to absorb the information.
I've tried the Balabolka app and another one I can't recall the name of but they seem to struggle with reading hyphenated words (a common practice in journal articles) and I couldn't see a way to upload the pdf directly. When I copy and paste the text into the application, I have to manually go through the entire text to remove any unnecessary spaces which causes the software to pause unnaturally in the middle of sentences. Not to mention the incredibly robotic-sounding voices that are really distracting.
Are there any applications out there that can help with this? I don't mind paying but would like to try out a free one if possible. Thanks!

What platform are you on? I have used voicedream reader on my phone to read some PDFs and it seems to work quite well but I think it's only available on Apple mobile devices

I was just using my PC, but I could swap to my phone I suppose if there was something out there that would work. I'm on an Andriod.

If your school has an accessibility office ask if you can get Read Write Gold to install on your device.

If you're using a PC, you can try using a screen reader to help read the text. I haven't read ebooks for a while but I was using Adobe Digital Editions along with NVDA screen reader. Both are free. You can always disable the screen reader when not needed.
