How do you keep yourself busy when you go out to eat? (self.Blind)
submitted by kelpangler
So I’m actually at a table right now eating dinner. This is probably my second time eating out alone. I have earbuds in and I’m listening to NPR but other than I’m just kinda looking around aimlessly. I’m avoiding looking towards people because I don’t want to seem like I’m staring. I’ve been picking up my iPhone to look at stuff, but putting the phone up to my face while eating is difficult. I’m definitely feeling a sense of loneliness and boredom right now. So what kind of things do you?

PS. I know it sounds like a stupid question but I’m still new to being blind. Everything is a new experience for me. Thanks!

Well, when I had sight, I would have been bothered about the surroundings , what other people are eating or wearing, is anyone staring at me, or such trivial issues, which I thought shall affect my life enormously! is there a beautiful girl which has caught my eyes? is her skirt too short? why is the baby licking his snot? the young girl is so not healthy, and things like that!

Now, its all about the food and the service. My seat needs to be comfortable, food hot and drinks and salads fresh.

I chew the food well, enjoy the myriad of flavours in my mouth and enjoy food like never before. If proper time is given to our food, they taste good and sweet.

Where did the greens come from? What about the meat? What marinade did they use? Are the veggies over cooked? Is my fish fillet fresh and juicy? is my fruit juice fresh? or is my coffee scalding hot? What about the different layers of the cake? and the yummy cream? How did they make it?

with such thoughts in my mind, the whole experience reaches a new level. i am in my own bubble now, not bothered about my surroundings, at all! Well , until there is a terror strike, bomb blast or an aeroplane has fallen down, rest of the world can go on with their work , without bothering me!

This level of indulgence , sometimes is a welcome experience. Seldom experienced to the fullest, yet some degree of it is refreshing and an eye opener!

When everything is done, pay, compliment and get lost!

lol

When you have gone out to eat, eat! Enjoy the food. Why do you want to be busy while you are eating? And do not be boarded about the people around you. They are minding their own business so you must carry on with yours. You have paid for the food, so enjoy every morsel!

When you have sight, I think the word “busy” can mean looking at people and observing how they’re sitting or looking at your food and identifying ingredients. These are seemingly mundane things that gets processed in the subconscious. Seeing is what provides a majority of the tidbits that my brain can munch on. I feel like there’s a vacuum in there now. That’s just my vision-centric way of looking at this. It’s just a really awkward experience right now. But I get what you’re saying.

Welcome to the dark side. lol

Drinking wine and scotch like a sommelier. Like a boss!

Are people looking at you thinking sterotypical "His sense of taste must be amazing" Yes, they are. To those that aren't you might as well be wallpaper.

It can be really disconcerting, not knowing when if yoi're being watched. It's well documemted that people are feeling increased anxiety using videoconferrencing this past year for the same reason.

Also. San Pellegrino sparkling mineral water is tasty. Don't pass out.

Yep, audio books, podcasts, and enjoying the food. God I miss eating out with lockdown

You're eating alone?

I just go through my YouTube subscription videos. if you're in public, just make sure you're wearing headphones.

Nothing to it bro.
kelpangler [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Thanks. I’ve subscribed to some blind podcasts and YouTube channels recently. Is that all there is though? I m not asking that in a bad way. Is it simply audio replacing much of what my vision provided? Probably sounds like an obvious question.

I was born blind and use youtube to entertain myself went out eating. So yeah, for me it is audio that entertains me.
Winnmark 1 points 2y ago
I mean... Yeah. Sometimes I'll just go thru whatever is in my subscription box.

I eat.

I haven't had a chance to go out and eat by myself in a couple of decades. And when I did, back then, I didn't have a smart phone. They weren't even invented...nor was the Internet.

So, I'd eat. Enjoy your meal. Get dessert.

How come? Are you unable to because of a condition or because you don’t want to? Sorry if I’m prying too much.
blackberrybunny 1 points 2y ago
How come I don't get out by myself? Well, I don't live in a big city anymore. I used to be able to just walk anywhere I wanted to, or hop on the street car, and enjoy my time alone. But then things changed and I ended up moving back home to Florida, and I met my husband 19 years ago. He's the best thing that ever happened to me. But we live very very rurally. No more walking anywhere. No buses, streetcars, or taxis or ubers. Our neighbors are pine trees and cows. No sidewalks. We live on a dirt road..... nothing to do, nowhere to go. It takes easily 30 minutes or more just to get to the nearest city, which isn't even that big. So that's why I don't get out by myself, but I'm ok with that.

There is the issue itself. We live in a society that does not know how to be alone, oron your own in public. There are so many gadgets and distractions that we miss the actual connection with people and present but not in mind is so often thecase.

I speak as someone who is also very consious ofthe being on my own thing. I dontgo to eat or cinema on my own for that reason. but it seems sad and I will do it at some stage.
kelpangler [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Are you conscious of going out alone because you aren’t able to keep yourself properly occupied or because of actual fear of danger?
MRMeneer 2 points 2y ago
WHEN i HAD MORE SIGHT i WAS CONSCIOUS OF GOING OUT ALONE BECAUSE THOSE THINGS SEEM SOCIAL.
MORE OFA CASE OF SITTING BY YOURSELF AND EATING SEEMS SOMEHOWODD.
nOW i AM CONSCIOUS OF DOING IT BECAUSE I STRUGGLE WITH MY VISION, BUT WHEN OUT WALKING AROUND i PREFER TO BE ON MY OWN BECAUSE I CAN TAKE THE TIME I NEED AND DONT KEEP LOOKING FOR THE OTHERS I AM WITH. i TEND TO F GET ON WITH I T MORE WHEN WALKING DOWN THE ROAD BY MYSELF. WHEN I AM WITH OTHERS I DONT WANTTO BUMP INTO THEM AND I SUPPOSETHE SPACIAL AWARENESS CAUSES ME TO BE MORE CONSCIOUS OF THINGS AND DISTRACT ME. .

I know what you mean about eating alone. Eating out is a social thing unless it’s a quick bite for lunch. I feel the same way about watching movies in theaters. I used to feel uncomfortable about that but after I had kids my wife and I started taking turns. Nothing like getting snacks and hunkering down for the full movie experience. No more of that though.

Apparently, when I was little, my mom and grandma had to take me outside because waiting in the restaurant was boring. Now I just sit and wait and do nothing.
blackberrybunny 1 points 2y ago
Just curios--where are you eating?
kelpangler [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I was seated outdoors at a standard American fare restaurant. An old town place just outside of LA.
blackberrybunny 1 points 2y ago
That sounds pretty nice. Especially to be outdoors. Here in FL, it's already too hot to sit outside. Too many bugs too!

Yes, I’ve thought about this a lot. I have a friend who retired early in life. He’s perfectly content with doing nothing. Of course, he can see and he was prepared to do this. The word “nothing” means something else entirely to him. To your point, I would like to relax but I’m not real sure how to do that yet.

Audiobooks. I have a dedicated crappy MP3 player for the job.
