Hi everyone. I thought this may help some of the folks new to the blind and low vision community. It’s a quick start guide on starting to use a white cane. (youtu.be)

Thanks for the video. Not only was it helpful for me, but it also n.v made me not feel self conscious about getting my free white cane from the nfb. I'm deaf blind on my left side, as well as having asperger's syndrome. I also like having my white cane since it Allows me to show people in visually impaired since sometimes I have trouble talking about it. It also is going to he good because it will help me feel safe when out and about on my own. I have enough vision to not need it constantly but it's still good especially when outside and the sun is in my eyes. I already use transition lenses, but I made it my new year resolution to see about things that will help me should I go completely blind.

I liked your explanation and the fact you showed you don't have to have mobility training to use it.only reasons I don't go get mobility training is because I'm scared they'd tell me since I'm still able to see somewhat that I don't need the cane and that I have to give it up. I'm technically legally blind but since I have some vision I feel like I'm not supposed to or allowed to own the cane, is that normal?

It truly makes my day hearing you say that. I’m so glad I was able to help you feel less self-conscious about starting your white cane journey. It’s a great skill with so many benefits if you are low vision. I was very self-conscious myself when I started using it and I was always worried what people would think. But it truly became a lifeline when I lost more vision. The great thing about it is you can choose when you want to use it in when you don’t need to.

I would call the NFB and see if you can get some O and M training if you feel it would benefit you. Most people have significant remaining vision and can still benefit from using a cane and all of the O and M instructors I know advocate for both using your remaining vision and using a cane either for ID purposes or for mobility. Just a thought for you to consider :)

Wishing you all the best!

Hello! Thanks for your video. I was trained using the 2 point touch technique, with a fiberglass cane from the NFB that has a metal tip on it. I love it. But everyone is different, and you should use what you are comfortable with, like you said.

Your video was very in depth and easy to understand. You really touched on every aspect of cane travel. It's a wonderful video!! I think you did an A+ job! I enjoyed watching it.

And also, you look FABULOUS in that black hat and gloves! It really suits you. Like a movie star!! So fashionable. I am a woman who just can't pull off wearing a gorgeous hat....but you look amazing!

I hope to find time today to see what other videos you might have. Thanks so much!

Thank you so much! 2 point touch was never something that was suggested to me until I was much older and set in my ways haha. I know so many people who love it but I could never quite get the hang of it for full time use.

I’m glad you as another experienced cane user could confirm I was explaining things clearly! That’s always my fear trying to put up tutorials or how to’s.

And thank you on the hats as well! It’s something I’ve had to work hard to bring into my wardrobe as an albino girl. I used to hate it but I believe we can all make ourselves more comfortable with our accommodations if we can find a way to make it reflect our personality and style a little bit whatever that may be. 😀

The only thing I can add to that is to get a belt holster for it. Yes it's big and ugly and sticks into you when you sit down but I yell at people to get one because it removes all excuse for not using it, and I find new people have 101 excuses for not using it.

I liked this from the second you told people to keep it between their feet when they're not using it. This comes from horrible experience of having to apologetically buy people replacement drinks. I am reliably advised you instinctively throw it into the crook of your right elbow to do other stuff with your right hand exactly like I do.

Also the not sweeping fast enough thing so you end up neatly hooking it around some obstacle and getting whacked in the shoulder. People don't get how energetic it has to be if you want to move fast.

About not swinging it high in the air I yell at people who wave it around too much, it's not a light saber, let's not play jedi knights, it attracts attention in a way that doesn't help. If I'm going to have to do this stuff, I'm going to do it like I'm some sort of professional.

Personally I tend to sort of blend into two point touch the faster I'm walking which tends to happen on routes I know really well. The only thing I don't tend to do is the pointy finger thing as I find it makes the whole back of my hand ache from the tension after a while, but I get that it gives people a lot of sensitivity and I advise newbies to do it. If they're giving themselves carpal tunnel then they're probably doing it enough to get in practice, that's my approach!
