submitted by SugarPie89
Im having difficulty finding videos about this topic that arent general informational type vvideos. I wanna know someones first hand experience with a vocational rehab program. Im in the process of connecting with a local agency and Im a bit nervous about it. Do you get to choose the job you want? What if you dont know what job you wanna do? How long is the training?

My experience has been somewhat decent. It started off really terrible though. Councilors not responding to calls and emails, not following through on tasks, etc. I think it depends on your councilor and state.

My experience is also potentially at least a couple decades out of date. I met with them, told them what I wanted to do and my plan for afterward. They paid for my tuition and books at university (no room & board - I lived a few miles from campus). I think there was a GPA minimum I had to meet go keep the funding, but I'm not 100% sure. It was sort of like a scholarship. They would have coordinated with disability services on campus, but I was so used to doing those sorts of things myself that I just worked directly with my professors and AFAIK, disability services never knew I was there.

After I graduated, they helped me via a small grant (that was specific to my state) for starting my business, which allowed me to do all the paperwork, get software licenses, and pay for a few other things.

They paid for low vision equipment that I needed throughout school and for some years after.

Let me preface by stating that my experience is from many years ago. I was nervous about working with VR services, too. What I learned quickly, was that if I communicated clearly about what I wanted to do, and what I needed from my counselor, everything went smoothly. I came in with a plan to attend college and had a plan to do it. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do for a job after, but was interested in work that would be supported by the degree program I wanted. I worked very hard, and ended up getting a bachelors degree, and then decided to keep going to get a masters degree. My counselor was very supportive, and always made sure I had what I needed. Fast forward a couple of decades. I now have a great job that lets me do everything I ever dreamed of, and be as independent as I want. My advice is to go ahead and work with VR. I wouldn't be where I am, had I not done so. Good luck!
