Weird. I set mine to 200% and it worked just fine and it's not a custom ROM.
The workaround is a fairly technical process. What kind of computer do you have? I could try to help you tomorrow. Or you can Google for how to install ADB.

At the moment I'm borrowing an old laptop (for this specific purpose) running Ubuntu 20.4 LTS. I've been googling around and have found instructions, I think, but between the text trouble and the bulk of this simply being over my head, I'm not making much headway.
I wonder if the issue is with the Nokia security patch specifically. Both phones I've tried were Nokias, one running 11 and one running 10.

Ubuntu is actually better for that than Windows.
Have you made any progress?

From your app list open Settings.
Then go to System and then Accessibility. Scroll down to the Display category and experiment with the Font Size and Display Scaling options.

I appreciate the response and don't want to sound flippant or something, but I used this app to make the text bigger than those settings could by themselves. I've already got them cranked all the way up.

Ah OK. Most people don't know about the accessibility features, so it makes sense to point one in that direction first. It's like "have you tried turning it off and on again."
I suppose you're using magnification for now? I find the triple tap and drag gesture pretty convenient.

I'm doing my best with that, yes. I find it irritating when typing, but may simply have to get used to it. I've tried "high contrast text" as well, but that actually makes a lot of things harder to read. The lack of font customizability is the only thing I don't like about Android One.
