Is this technology available or accessible to the blind community yet?
I know that a lot of research has been done using neural networks for automatic image captioning, but I haven't found any program that I could just (easily) download and run. The idea being that I'd be able to give it an image as input and have it generate a text description of what it contains.
Did I miss something? I'd assume that people would be interested in this if it existed, but maybe there isn't much of a need?
Or are there built-in functions in iPhones for example that already provide this type of thing?

Picture smart, a feature built into JAWS can do this, and there used to be a similar add-on for NVDA but it no longer works sadly.
Really though I'm sure someone could make another similar add-on quite easily, the biggest problem is the limited API calls, plus it would need to be kept up to date based on service changes.

I know Facebook was working on something like that to add captions to photos. I think it's active in instagram. I haven't seen any desktop solutions. Seems like you'd want it to be an add on for your screen reader.

Voiceover on ios if your on ios14 now trys to guess what the images are, and read text from them assuming you have it turned on in voiceover settings. Or yeah, seeing ai too. Or picture smart in jaws. Not sure about NVDA or android though. And if your on a mac, pressing vo shift L I believe it is will try and read an image, though not sure how accurately.

OP here, I searched a little more and found Seeing AI, which seems to do what I was looking for.
Is there anything for computers, though?

Chrome has a an image recognition feature, although I think it pulls text out of them more than anything else. Works with local images though.
