Scuba diving certification (self.Blind)
submitted by shiningeagle_
I know this is a long shot, but I’m having a hard time finding an answer so I thought I’d post here.
I’m blind and really want to get my scuba diving certification. The problem is, I can’t just go to the nearest pool that offers classes because I’m required to dive with 2 buddies who have received Adaptive Dive Buddy certifications. I have done the Discover Scuba pool experience that the Handicapped Scuba Association hosts periodically and did a 30 minute open water dive with a certified instructor in Italy while on vacation. Completing the online learning portion through PADI won’t be an issue, I just need access to instructors who can help me complete the pool portion of the training.
Does anyone know of a dive school where I can complete the pool training over a weekend/a few days? A couple open water dives are needed to get the certification, so preferably somewhere warm like Florida. I’m willing to travel anywhere in the US. If you have a recommendation, please leave a link down below. Thanks!

Sorry I don't have an specific school suggestions but a blind friend of a friend was certified open water. She did her training on the Texas gulf-coast. You may want to consider a trainer who can certify for "black water" diving. $1 The link is from SDI but I believe PADI and NAUI have similar certifications in their programs. This is training that applies to diving in water with zero visibility usually due to silt/mud but also some night, cave and wreck diving. Black water diving is a technical diving specialty and most of the people doing this specialty are commercial divers for oil rigs, water authorities, police divers, etc. There are many places teaching this type of diving, certainly not as many as basic open water but you should be able to find a place. The fireman I talked to who had this certification said that they did their pool training with a blacked out face mask and open water training in a muddy lake.
