Choosing a braille display size (self.Blind)
submitted by HeftyCryptographer21
Hello r/blind. I am getting myself a braille display, and I was wondering which size all of you had. The ones I am considering are the 20 cell, and the 32 cell, but I am open to others. The CNIB is paying, so cost isn't an issue. I am Deafblind, with about 20/500 vision, and I want something semi portable, but also big enough to use to read and do my work. I am going off to university next year, so I wanted to know what you guys thought. Thanks

Hi. I would go with the 32 cell display. For the most part, 40 cell displays and under are portable. 20 cell displays are great for on the go tasks, but any intense textbook reading is easier on a 32 cell display as larger technical terms will require more space. Do you rely on Braille displays for communication? If yes, I think that it is worth saving up to get a 20 cell display like the Orbit Reader 20 Plus as a back up device.

I don't fully rely on braille displays for communication, as I have some vision, but I do use them a lot. I know that brailliant has a 12 cell braille display, which fits in the pocket of my jeans, and costs about 1,000 CAD, so I was considering buying that out of pocket, and a 32 or 40 cell display, which seems to be what you are suggesting. Thanks a lot for responding.

I use a 20 cell; it's compact and easy to travel. However, I know people who say they don't like how small it is. So it depends. If you plan on doing a lot of reading, 32 might be better.

I don't find a 40 too long for my lap and certainly I'd prefer to have a few more cells than too few. I can only afford a 20 for home use and I've gotten used to reading with it but if I had unrestricted funds, I'd personally buy something larger.

I am lucky enough to not have to pay, but I am concerned the 40 isn't portable enough for me.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Which do you think is better for both use at home, and travel. The 20 cell seems big enough, but I'm not really sure.

It depends on how much you're using it and what you're using it for. I'd avoid the 20-cell if you're going to be using it for hours every day.

All right, thanks. That's what I was thinking.
